why are there two folders namely 'program files' and 'program files x86' on c:???

Yes. Program Files x86 is for 32-bit apps on a 64-bit OS.

so if i try to install a 32 bit software in 'program files' rather than 'program files x86', it will still work right?

I suppose you could try, but why would you do that? Windows 64-bit specifically puts 32-bit apps into x86 to ensure it only uses 32-bit dlls.

so the os itself detects whether the prog. is of 32 bit and keeps it in x86 folder? Since while instalin sum progs of 32bit, it might directily instal itself in program files folder...

Yes. 64-bit Windows will automatically put 32-bit apps into Program Files x86. You can try changing it, but I wouldn't recommend it. This is not new to Windows 8, but I'm guessing this is your first 64-bit OS.
