Adobe Reader .pdf files won't open with IE 9

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium and IE 9. The last 2 months I haven't been able to open Adobe Reader .pdf files. I just updated Adobe Reader which I’ve done numerous times with no luck. When I try to download a file, the file isn’t a .pdf file.

With Mozilla I am able to open or download Adobe .pdf files.

I’ve Googled this which usually leads to the Adobe download site.

Is this a common glitch with IE 9? I was thinking of going to IE 10 but I don’t think you can go back to IE 9 which is running fine except for this issue.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Is it 32 or 64bit Win7? What version of Acrobat Reader?

So you're saying that when you click on a link to a pdf, it downloads something else? What does it download as?

Did you look if the acrobat add-on was enabled for IE?

IE10 is only in the "preview" stage for Win7. I.E. It's a beta. I don't think it will help the situation.

I've intalled Abobe Reader version 11.0.01. I am running 64bit Win7.

Yes, it's enabled in add-ons. When I went to download a file I did see a .dll file so I knew something is wrong.

I could try uninstalling it, reboot and install again. All Win updates are installed.

If you're going to uninstall, try the Acrobat Cleaner tool.

If the add-on is enabled, it should try to open the pdf from within the browser. If you disable it, it should try to just download the pdf as a regular file.

You can also try the offline installer.

If you get fed up with Acrobat like many of us have, you can try PDF-Xchange or Foxit as an alternative.
