energy efficient PC

Looking to build an energy efficient PC for everyday use.

No Gaming or video processing.

Just wondering if anyone has experience of the intel g600 series, the low TDP ones such as the G645T http://ark.intel.com/products/series/53254

I will be using highish end components including DDR3 and Sata 3 (6Gbts) SSD's in Raid to get max performance. Will be installing win 7 Pro O/S

Already have a 330 atom board with DDR2 and Sata2, which isn't quite cutting it for me.

Any thoughts?

Worthy of consideration, didn't turn up in my filtering, probably something I did or didn't do!

It has 16 PCI Express lanes compared to 1, a max memory bandwidth of 21 GB/s compared to 17, 4 threads instead of 2, hyper-threading, (the list goes on), and all with the same Max TDP of 35 W.

It is roughly twice the money though. :)

Indeed, but then from what I can see, the 600(T) series over here (what I can find, they're like rocking horse poop) seem to be oem, so would need a heatsink purchase on top, so not so far off in $£$£.

As an aside, I started out on this project considering an AMD with a really low TDP of 18w

I know that wouldn't really compare to the i3 or even the 600, but should be a big improvement over the 330 atom I have?

The whole story is now unraveling!

I'm currently using as my day to day a Dual Core E5200 (1302@Passmark) with a TDP of 65w, on 2 x 1 gig of ddr2 in dual channel mode, single ssd sata3. I'm happy with the performance with the onboard gfx, and indeed overall. Just wanna reduce the energy bill (this is just a part of a bigger project, LED lighting, LED tv over plasma, energy efficient appliances etc etc). But they still need to meet a standard that's acceptable in performance terms!

The atom 330 is on a Zotac board, with 4 Gig ddr2 in single channel, 2 x ssd Sata3 in raid striped. I bought it (at a bargain price) just to see how it performs, with the fallback that it could make a decent HTPC/FreeNas system in the event it wasn't good enough as a day to day PC.

Anyway, amd 350 seems to fall 1/2 way between the 330 atom and my e5200 (both of which are at ddr 2 and running win 7 pro @32 bit) and not reaping the full benefits of the Sata3 SSDs.

Do you think that the AMD350, with 2 x Sata3 SSDs striped and 8gb ddr3 running 64bit Win 7 Pro will get close to or equal the e5200 in performance terms?

Looks like the g600t and i3 may be out of the window here :confused:

Note to wonderinguy34, had email of your input (appreciated), don't know why it hasn't appeared in thread here. Unlikely to need gfx card either way to be honest.

I doubt it. According to the Passmark scores, the AMD cannot "think" near as fast as the E5300.

Pentium E5200 = 1,302
AMD E-350 APU = 905
Intel Atom 330 = 549

Here's one way to look at it. Imagine cruising down the highway in your Atom at 55 MPH. An AMD whips past you doing 90. Two seconds later a Cop in his Pentium screams past you doing 130.
