I usually put my computer in SLEEP mode when I am away a long period of time. When I turn it back on, 90% of the time, everything is good. 10% of the time, the screen does not detect anything. The only thing new in my computer recently is RAM but this started about 3 months before the new RAM.
I am not sure if it is a SLEEP problem.
There's a much greater chance it's a Sleep problem than a Graphics problem. Many people have trouble with Sleep mode. A long while back I tried to use it on several different computers and never found it to be reliable, I switched to Hibernate and am currently using it on a Desktop and 2 Laptops and it does work. Power on to desktop is around 30 seconds on each computer---I find that 30 seconds doesn't really ruin my day.
Honestly, for the longest of time, I have always used Hibernation until recently because I bought maximum RAM. As you already may know, when you max out the ram, the hiber.sys file expand like by 3 times. Therefore and takes up much of the space on the OS drive. Therefore, I have turned it off and have been relying on SLEEP for the last 2 months. You may be right but such a coincident that it started happening right after the screen problem too. I actually had to rebuild my system last night because it messup my RAID0. Luckly, I have a constant backup so didn't lose anything.
I am trying to isolate if it is a RAM setting thing, the SLEEP or the graphic card.
I agree it's probably the flaky Sleep mode.
As far as the ram goes - can you put the original stuff back in to test.

Actually, if I recall correctly, even with the previous ram and it does happen on hibernation sometimes as well too. Not sure if it is the exact same though. It happens rarely for hibernation. Same for sleep but just a bit more than hibernation.
But the good thing about hibernation when it happens is, I just reset the computer and when it reboots, it still able to come back to where it was. Hibernation in this case does not work so well for me as I mentioned earlier. Increased the hiber.sys file quite a bit.
Drivers are the primary cause of hibernation, standby, sleep issues. Outdated device drivers may not support power management and/or cause incompatibility problems.
Some basic graphics drivers, such as a VGA video driver, do not support power management.
Audio drivers must use Windows Driver Model (WDM) architecture exclusively.
Incompatible third-party software may interfere with, or not support power management.
Outdated peripheral firmware can also cause problems.
Older computer hardware may not be ACPI-compliant or may predate ACPI.
etc., etc., ... :(
The problem is that both SLEEP and HIBERNATION work 95% of the times. Just that 5% where sometime computer comes on but there is no picture on the screen. Therefore, driver might not be the issue because if it was the driver, then it would not work in the first place.
I still think it might be the graphic card, power supply or the new memory not setting correctly on the voltage. My LCD is first generation and bought it like 8 years ago.
Also, it might help to let you know, SOMETIMES I can actually still type in the login password although the screen is blank. Once login, I just press on the SLEEP button on the keyboard and put it back to sleep. Then when I wake it up, then everything is fine.
I can do that sometimes only. Other times, in that 5% when the screen does not come on but the computer does, it just sits there. When I do hard reset, then when the computer starts, the BIOS screen comes up and said that the CMOS is unstable, bla bla. Since I got new RAM 2 months ago, I have up the voltage today from 1.5 to 1.6. The RAM is expected to run at 2.65v, I think.
To check if it might be a problem with devices connected to the computer, disconnect all non-essential connected devices (printers, scanners, USB drives). Restart the computer with only the original mouse, monitor, and keyboard connected. If this resolves the sleep/standby issue, one of the connected devices was causing the problem. Reconnect one device and test to see if the issue occurs again. Continue adding devices and testing until the you find the device that is causing the problem.
Many software components start up automatically and run without being seen. Most of these programs are not really necessary to the work performed on a computer, but, they can interfere with Sleep/Standby/Hibernate modes. The MSCONFIG system configuration tool can be used to help narrow down which of these programs might be causing the issue.
Power settings control the computer’s ability to enter and exit Sleep/Standby/Hibernate mode. Make sure the power options are set so the computer can use sleep/standby mode correctly. (Start/Control Panel/System and Security/Power Options)
Some screen savers can interfere with sleep/standby mode. Disabling or changing the screen saver might resolve the issue.

Do you really want to replace them one at a time only to discover the new items don't help?
I've never used sleep mode since it's known to cause headaches.
I had the same issue on my laptop after a fresh install. I ended up just deleting the hiber.sys, rebooting 2 times and all was well. That happened to me after a fresh install though. Could this be possibly be caused by paging? Just a curious question.
forgot to mention, rebuild the hiber file before you reboot
It has been a month since I replied to this thread as I was monitoring the stability of my settings. Turns out to be the new memory. Only changes that I made was up the voltage from 1.5 to 1.56. Since this change, sleep has not gone into deep sleep so far.
However, I still have to turn the monitor on before I wake it up. If I wake it up before I turn on the monitor, then the same problem would exist.
Griven, thanks for your replies. I turned off paging and hibersys because both consume so much space as you max out the RAM on the board.
