what are some causes for restarts??

Here is the problem? Over the past month or so, my computer has started to shut down and restart on its own in the middle or things. It could be while I am on the net or playing a game or working on a web page. It can be anytime on anything, there is no logical progression as to when it does stuff. It is 2 years old, P2-350 with 2 HD's. Norton that is updated and ran regularly, defrag done on a biweekly basis.
Any suggestions as to why this is happening?
It runs fine otherwise, just goes bye bye at times...Thanks

Primary is a line glitch quick power out.. you might not even see the lights flicker.

Second is low power (brown outs) and the powersupply can't boost enough to keep up.

third there is a jumper that is not tight enough on a post(s).. (been there)

fourth is static electricity in your case.. dust build up etc. random but can happen not to mention you walking on the carpet and zap it yourself.

Could also just be some app causing the situation. Just for GPs, msconfig and uncheck load startup group items, reboot and see if prob persists. Yes, narrow down. No, you at least eliminated problems like this...

I'm currently running the latest version of GirlFriend and I've been having some problems lately. I've been running the same version of DrinkingBuddies 1.0 forever as my primary application, and all the GirlFriend releases I've tried have always conflicted with it.

I hear that DrinkingBuddies won't crash if GirlFriend is run in background mode and the sound is turned off. But I'm embarrassed to say I can't find the switch to turn the sound off. I just run them separately, and it works okay. Girlfriend also seems to have a problem co-existing with my Golf program, often trying to abort Golf with some sort of timing incompatibility.

This has happened to me a couple of times. My solution was to shut down the machine, and then make certain every line in or out of the computer was firmly plugged in at both ends. Worked for me. Actually, it's a long shot but the price is right and it might work.

Nick: It is interesting you mention apps. I took some advice from VDr. and loaded the ME defrag. I followed all the directions renaming the win 98 defrag and renaming the win me defrag. I ran defrag and the darn thing on its own rebooted at 70%. So after the system rebooted, I just shutit down completely and then brought it back up. Everything defragged just fine after that. Their had to be some software glitch that caused it.

Daizy.. generally heat shows a couple of symptoms. You get a lot of random errors which means the system is getting unstable and or the system freezes up. (system freezes not caused by some software problems or ram etc.) I've found that good cooling eliminates most of these. Modern systems will shut down before critical temps are reached.

True restarts can be caused by software, too. I rarely experience them and I try out a lot of software.
