"Scan for hardware changes"

When I hot plug my sata drives, SOMETIME, it takes forever to detect them. They do get detected by doing "Scan for hardware changes" but that takes a few minutes too.

-Any command lines for this?
-A way to make the system detect the drives faster?

I did find this but have not tried it.

Are the SATA drives being plugged in via E-Sata or USB?

Which OS are you using?

Do you have another pc to test the connection time on?
