Which OS so we can move the thread?
How certain are you that there is a recovery partition?
If you live in the USA or Canada you can get replacement dvd's from HP for $16.00 ...I just got one two months ago.
Was told this model had a recovery partition with OS.... "Windows HP Home Media"
I did find the online manual... said to use F11 to reformat to factory settings.. will not do this command either ..
Are you sure the keyboard is working OK? Can you access the BIOS setup at all? Have you tried a different keyboard?
Have not tried other keyboard.... I guess that's worth a try... keyboard in use now seems to be working fine in all other applications..
If the keyboard is working in Windows, then it should be OK. It is possible though that the BIOS is not recognizing it, which is why I asked if you could enter the BIOS setup. Have you tried that, and what was the result.
Is that an HP or a Gateway? GT4016 sounds like a Gateway model number.
Its an HP... from Gateway.... GT4016
HP from Gateway? Are you sure? Hewlett Packard and Gateway are two different companies.
Yes it is a HP computer from Gateway....
Some Gateway computers came with Acer eRecovery Management installed on a hidden partition on the drive, so try the process below.
Select models, with Microsoft Windows, have the ability to have the Operating System reinstalled from a hidden partition built into the computer.
Note: During the process, all data stored on your computer will be overwritten. This means all your files, such as email and photos, will be erased. Therefore, we recommend making a backup of all personal data before starting the recovery process.
To start the system recovery:
Restart the computer.
When the Gateway logo appears on the screen, press the left Alt, and the F10 keys.
If you are prompted with a Microsoft Windows boot screen, press the Enter key.
After the Acer eRecovery Management application has loaded, select your restore type.
Read the notice, and then click Next when you are ready.
Click Next to begin the restore process. The restore can take anywhere fom 10 minutes up to an hour.
Once the restore is complete your computer will reboot. Upon rebooting it will load Windows and start installing your drivers and software. Your computer will reboot several times during this process. After everything is complete your computer will be like it was when you first purchased it.
If the ability to reinstall from the previous method is not available or fails, recovery of the Operating System will need to be from Recovery Media. If you do not have a set of Gateway Recovery Media, you may purchase the set online from the Gateway Recovery Media Order Form.

Been awhile regarding this problem. Gotten away from me. I have an OEM copy of win xp pro that I do not use any longer. I tried using this to reformat, but it would not allow to do so. Rejected. I was asked to check if there was a product key on the computer. Making sure that actually the pc was not a white box. There was I was hoping this product key would allow the reformat if OS was on the HD. I tried searching for the winnt32.exe. thru the i386 folder. There were nine folders but nothing showing the installation files. Named "key" or "serial". Maybe matching the key on case. My question today is, can this copy of win xp pro still be isntalled in any way? I hope story here is not confusing... I did go to the Gateway site and see the recovery disks. There were other sites, with different prices.. Any other info is greatly appreciated... Thanks all ...=^)
When you install an OEM version of Windows, the Microsoft license agreement requires you to affix the Windows Product ID sticker that's included in the packaging, on to the computer. The reason for this is because OEM versions of Windows are non-transferable. Which means that when the computer dies, so does that OEM copy of Windows.
