Transfer songs from ipod to computer/itunes

I need to transfer songs from ipod to itunes. Spent some time looking for free software to do so and found that most that said free only allowed a small number of songs at a time or that free actually meant free download.

My wife then asked why am I being so cheap.

Now, I am not looking for a free software, just a good software which will transfer songs, just songs, about 1600 songs, from my ipod to itunes.

Came across iRip which had fairly good reviews and I am able to actually contact customer service and ask questions. iRip costs $20, which is certainly within my price range.

Any reason why I should not go with iRip?

Installed itunes and booted up an old ipod nano I last used in 2007 to test this..

I connected the nano to the pc after setting itunes to not automatically sync with devices.

Closed itunes, connected the nano and waited for the driver to install.

When the ipod was visible in the computer I clicked on it and opened the iPod_Control folder and copied the music folder to the desktop. The music folder contains various folders typically named F00, F01 etc which contain the audio files.

Note, if you don't see any folders then in folder options, select show hidden files and folders.

I then clicked on the music folder on the desktop, selected properties and unselected hidden and read only and followed the prompts.

All the sub folders in the music folder (F00 etc) will also be unhidden and no longer read only.

Then I opened itunes, and selected File - add folder to library and all the music (664 files, 7.25Gb) was imported.

Thanks. That sounds workable. One has to be careful, though, of syncing, which would then erase all of the songs on my ipod. I will try it on an ipod of lesser value.

Itunes, edit - preferences - devices tab, tick "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically."

Thats if using a pc obviously, on a mac, no idea..
