CD & DVD Drives Not Working

A few weeks ago we got the nasty Antivrus thing and had to go thru the Intensive Care cleaning steps to get it off. We noticed last night the CD and DVD drives do not work. We have not tried them until last night since we got the virus, but they worked fine before.

The drive letter is there for both, but they will not start nor read anything from those drives.

Is there something we can do to get these working again?

Please have a look in Device Manager (Windows key + Pause/Break, then click "Device Manager" in the left-hand pane), and tell us what the status of the CDROM drive is in there.

Try this first. Right click the "my computer" icon on the desktop and left click "properties". Click the hardware tab. Click device manager button. Click the plus next to CD/DVD drives. Right click on each drive and from the menu click "uninstall". Do this for both drives. Ignore any warning. Reboot your computer. On reboot,Windoze will re-install drivers. If this doesn't do it, give us another shout...:)

You may need to run the CD filters fix. Check your device manager like SuperSparks said.

We checked the device manager and it showed the two devices with yellow ! beside them.

We followed the instructions to uninstall and reboot which actually did re-install them. A music CD will play in the CD drive. When we try a DVD we get an error message that says there is not a "compatible DVD decoder installed." So where should we go to get that?? We use Windows Media Player.

That's that issue. You probably don't have the right codec. I dumped WMP for VLC years ago.

We found our Roxio disk and installed it, but we got the same error. Will purchase another today and see if it works. Will post back.

I've seen many systems with the "filters" problem that have Roxio. Which Roxio app did you install?

Like I mentioned you need the right codec in order to play DVDs in WMP. If you don't want to use VLC, then you'll have to download the codec packs. IMO, it much easier to just install VLC.

Following Midknyte's advice, downloaded VLC, will give it a nice test drive.

I saw the other link but based on your recommendation, I wanted to try VLC, haven't spent a lot of time with it but so far I like it.
