[RESOLVED] Computer shuts off at the splash screen

Windows XP pro
AMD Duron 1300 cpu
512 memory

When I turn the computer on it starts loading then goes to the screen that says windows did not start because of....and then gives the options of start windows normally which when the counter goes down to zero it stops. In safe mode or safe mode with command prompt it stops at a line that says multi (0)disk(0)partition(1)windows\system32 drives\agp 440 sys. Things I tried. I ran the XP disk and it starts to run the installation program and gets to the point where it says starting windows. I get a pretty blue screen and the computer shuts off. So I put the hard drive into another XP machine and the same thing happened. Then I put the hard drive from the working machine into the first one that didn't work and got the same results. Then I took the hard drive that I had taken out of the machine that worked and put it back in to the computer that worked, turned it on and it did the same thing as the one that is broke. So now I have two broken machines and two hard drives that don't work. This is not my machine so I don't have to much info on it. Any help would be appreciated. Let me know if you need more info.

So what would have caused the computer to shut down while it was running? I realize getting accurate information on what happened from someone who is even less knowlegable than me is hard. Why would putting the hard drive in another computer have the same problem? Why, when I put the original hard drive back in the computer that worked cause the same shutdown problem? And how do I get the updated drivers for the motherboard say if I put them on a flash drive to run on the problem computer which won't start in safe mode or any other mode? Could it be a virus?

So I downloaded the files for the six floppy's for windows xp and started to load them. I got to the #3 and got this message "File SETUPREG.HIV could not be loaded. The error code is 4096" So I looked up the error code and it said something to the effect that the hard drive was bad. So I tried three more hard drives and got the same message. I downloaded a supposed fix but have no way of loading it. I would like to try formatting the hard drive or any of the others but don't know how to go about that since either of the computers comes up with the same problem.

Start with DBAN which will overwrite everything on the hdd.

But first, I would run memory test and see if something is wrong with them.

Start by testing the RAM.

If it passes, test the hard drive next.

If it passes, boot from a Windows XP CD (not floppy disk[s]) and install Windows XP.

So what I did was take a hard drive to a local Geek (unlike me, someone who knows what he is doing) and had him erase the hard drive totally. Then I installed it in the computer and tried three different cd roms. The third one finally read the xp cd after the third try and I proceeded to load and get things working.
