It did work, then suddenly it didn't, apparently this is common with this machine.
It's running XP Home and the driver I just installed from the HP site is sp43746.,exe.
Installing the driver changed nothing. Speaker sound is fine.
Anyone got a suggestion?

Did you try a system restore to when it was working? And/or uninstall the driver and reinstall?
Can't do a Restore and yes, uninstalled and reinstalled latest driver.
Try uninstalling the device itself from Device Manager and restart after removing it.
