How 2 Connect to my PC
There have been times when it would have been usefull to connect to my PC from my mates house for file transfer etc.
what i wanna know is how do i access my files from my m8s house a few miles away via internet? (i can experiment with two phone lines in my house for now tho)
I was also under the impression that i would be able to goto friends house and dial up to my pc to get internet access (and my files) rather than using his usual dial-up ISP...
I have tried making my PC into a dial up server (as i have cable modem), but this didn't work...it would connect OK but wouldn't access network (browse files) or internet.
I have my drives shared as i am on a network at home.
if you don't know much about above methods then is there another way just for file access, ie. in my mates pc address bar type sumthing simular to this: ftp/:myIPaddress
To put into simple words, i would like my m8s PC on my network (only now and then) via TCP/IP or DialUp server etc.
I am totaly new to this dialup server stuff and wish to learn more, so if any1 got any good links for me to read about the above, or if its easy enuf to explain then i would apreciate it alot.
Thanx in advance. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

hello
you can do a dailup and fight it or you
can install pc anywhere , it allows you to dail up your pc and see your pc desktop and run it remotely, you do have to install it on both pc's
the internet side is very risky and should avoid

i dont really wanna get pc anywhere as i prob wont be using it that often...
this is how far i have got now...
pc dials in and after verifing password it says
Error 650: the computer u r dialing into does not respond to a network request. check your server type setting in the properties of the connection. if problem persiats, check with your network administer (which is me but i aint got a clue) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Both the pc's i am expermenting with r normally on a network anyway, so all comp names etc r allready setup...
what else do i need to do...?
also on the dialup server settings which of the following should i be using (i would guess no2):
1. Default
2. PPP, internet, windows NT server
3. windows for workgroups
i have tried 'em all and am just getting more confused, i must be doing sumut rong!
Thanx all for any input, i am so glad i found this forum (better l8 than never)!

Hyper terminal maybe the answer.
Just remembered that old system is what they use where I work as it is local on the telephone. Also the cheapest for networking they could find. Maybe just what you want https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

A cheap (free) insecure way to transfer files is to use AIM. Set your computer to always allow your mate to direct connect. You should then be able to get and send files. This may be possible with other peer to peer programs as well.

Net Meeting will allow remote access to the desktop of your mates machine, but you have to have the remote machine online, and know the IP and have it set up with a password you know. Net Meeting does not need to be running on the remote machine at the time I don't believe. Also if both machines are running NetMeeting you can share control of any running application, I would assume that includes Windows Explorer.
[edit]Whoops, I mean access to your machine from your friends house[/edit]

ahhhhhaaaa, nice 1 guys, sorted the remote desktop feature out in NetMeeting (to think i've had that prog from day1 and never even knew it done that, thanx to VDr now i do!).
That would be perfect for what i want except for 1 thing:
The only thing i couldn't get it to do is transfer files from remote PC to Controling PC which would be usefull (i can browse my drives but when i copy sumut it just thinks i am working on remote PC only (how it should b i guess))
But yeah i'm really impressed by this remote desktop feature its cool.
During the experiment somehow the PC has had a bender and half of my system sounds do not work (i 1st noticed b'cuz netmeeting didn't ring anymore, but it did @ 1st) and when i go into the control panel and try to play 'em i get an error message that my wav files r curupt, i've tried restarting n stuff, but this havent fixed it.....so i'm now formating the c drive and ReGhosting my hard drive.....hopefully be back in 10mins all working again.
BTW i'm not complaining...just letting u know 4 ur info.....thats wat backups r for.
Thanx all for the info, i wouldn't 'ave found it otherwise. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I just realised thet i can use it to transfer files 2 via MSN Messenger on the remote PC.
This should do the job 4 me as i won't be using it 2 often anyway. Thanx all. Most appreciated, u always make me happy in the end. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
