Hi All, .......... I have two hard drives on my computer, each with four partitions. I would like to transfer the contents of one partition on drive one to another partition (now empty) on drive two. What is the procedure that will enable me to successfully do this? Just for further information can this be done with the operating system.
In Windows Explorer, drag and drop the folder(s) you want copied from one drive to the other.
Or right-click and select Copy, then in the destination partition right-click and select Paste.
FWIW, you will probably get significantly faster transfer speeds when copying to a different physical drive than if copying to a different volume on the same drive, as the drive heads don't have to keep moving back and forth.
SpywareDr and SuperSparks, ........... Beautifully simple, but I got a nastygram: FOLDER ACCESS DENIED, "You require permission from Administrator to make changes to this folder."
I am the Administrator but I don't see how or where to apply what is required. Further help please and thank you.
shrdlu--Can you copy and past the whole folder rather than individual files?
If not you will have to take ownership of the folder

Hi Jim, ........... Here I'm seeing that old problem of undefined terms. I tend to think of the chain-of-command going from the high end to the lowest as: Drive or Partition, folder, to files. I followed SuperSparks advice where I thought he was using Partitions (Drives D:, E:, etc.) but then the "No Access" pop up uses the term Folders. Then your reply uses the terms Folders and Files. Could we pin down the meaning of terms before going on? I hope I'm not being too picky but those terms (and an older one used to be Directory) have always caused me to pause. Even the two links you give uses the Folder term and if I have to take ownership of each folder transferring the contents of a partition will be a long process.
Since the partitions that I'm considering are in the gigabyte range, with many Folders to be transferred, I'm preferring a process that can copy the whole partition and not one Folder at a time.
This still leaves the administrator situation hanging and as I said previously I'm not sure how to apply the Administrator authorization.
Directory and Folder are different names for the same thing, with Directory being an older term. Those terms are interchangeable.
Where it can get confusing, is that, as I think you are alluding to, the permissions dialogs in Windows can refer to an entire drive volume as a "folder". Essentially it is doing that, because the root of a drive volume is just one giant folder as far as Windows is concerned.
Perhaps a little history would be of help here. Are these partitions on an external or internal drive? Is there much, if any, data on them?
Hi All, ........... Well it would appear that the contents of partitions can be transferred between two partitions using programs such as EASUS Partition Master or MiniTools Partition Wizard. I used each of them in getting the data from one partition to another.
