I was given a HD that had Lunix on it and I tryed to Fdisk it to load Win98. When I answer the question yes that I want Fat32 I get the message "error reading fixed disk".
How do you wipe a drive that has had Lunix on it?

I think you need a partitioning tool like this: http://www.masterbooter.com/ or some other commercial software ( http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/D...ent/Partition/ ) to rid your machine of the old linux partition before you start re-partitioning.

My memory is rusty dealing with Linux, you could try using DEBUG available in the Windows98 startup disk: http://www.windrivers.com/hd/debug.htm

Since it is a Linux partition, you have to use something that will read it, which MS Fdisc will not.
If you have a Linux CD somewhere you can use the FDISK that is on there to remove the partition. If not, you can use Partition Magic or the free Rannish Partition program.

The best way to get rid of linux partitions and non dos partitions is to use a program called delpart. This is delete the partition and the information in the MBR.

All I did was FDisk /MBR
It cured my problem and then I could fdisk and format

I tried every thing:
Yuri, where do I find the program "delpart"?
Theoran, I don't have a Linux disk - the HD I got came with linux on it.
Shinma, the only "debug" I have is on a DOS 6.2 disk and I get the message "Incorrect DOS version"
[email protected], I tried aefdisk with
/delall and I got the error message " error: cannot read sector eror code 325697" disk is uncanged"

Assuming that the bios is set correctly for the drive I think in most cases writing standard MBR code as bkoenig suggest should work. If you want to look at and delete the partitions as well as write standard code to the MBR then the TestDisk program on a bootable (use the win98 system files) floppy I mentioned in http://discussions.virtualdr.com/For...ML/042809.html should do fine. (remember to choose write at the end)
Is there any chance that the bios requires an overlay for a disk of this size or are you doing this on the KT7 that is in your signature?
Perhaps the disk is in rough shape? - if you post the model I'll look for the mfg's lowlevel diagnostics.
