[RESOLVED] Windows 7 shutdown.

Since I installed and used Seagate's 1Gig external drive, it seems that the computer shutdown takes forever. Tried a few things from Google, no real change. Seagate's technical support did not have any idea.
If I remove the Seagate drive the shutdown is back to normal.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

burgert--Shut the external hard drive off (using safely remove hardware if necessary) before shutting down.
If that does not help, use Process Explorer to see what is running before shutdown. Shut all the programs which you can see are open first so you can isolate only those of which you are aware.

Jim, thanks for your reply, as I said, if I disconnect the drive, all is normal. So I have to assume that the drive is the culprit.
Any other suggestions?

Did you disable system restore for the external? If you didn't set a static letter for the external in disk management, do that first.

My computer properties - Advanced system settings - System protection - choose the external - configure - turn off system protection

Midknyte, I disabled system restore as soon as I installed the drive, no help there.

Go to Device Manager, right-click on the external drive, choose Properties, then in the Policies tab, select "Quick removal". See if that helps.

SuperSparks, thanks, but the quick removal was already been checked.

In that case, the best option is just to get into the habit of switching off the external drive before shutting down Windows. Stick a post-it note on the PC until it becomes second nature.

Try clicking the Start button, typing in:

shutdown -s -t 0 -f

and pressing [Enter]. If it works, (i.e., your computer quickly shuts down), create a shortcut on your Desktop using that command.

SpywareDr, thanks for your interesting suggestion, the only problem is that the PC shuts down just as slow as before.

Did you set a static drive letter or not? Like I said, you need to do that AND disable system restore.

Did you install any Seagate software? Maybe it's doing something at shutdown?

Did you check that your AV isn't doing shutdown scans?

The only possibility is that Norton might be doing a scan, during shutting down. After disabling Norton, the PC might have shut down slightly faster, but if this is the problem, I will ignore it.
I can not find anything in the installed Seagate software and the drive does have a static drive letter.

Did you try another USB port?

If you're using it on a USB hub, try it without one.

Does it cause the same problem on another computer?

Doc, I did all of that you are suggesting, no noticeable change. I think I just give up, the problem is just an annoyance, not really that bad. I have another external drive, which works just fine, so this tells me that the problem is with the Seagate product.

One way to tell for sure is to see if it causes the same problem on other computers.
