Can't Connect 2nd PC to Internet thru Router or Modem

I running Windows Vista Home Premium on my current PC connected to a Linksys N broadband router. I also have a work laptop hard wired into the router and everything works fine.

I was trying to connect my older PC with Windows XP to the router and even straight from the modem but it won’t connect to the internet. It did the 1st time through the router and by default it connected to MSN…no problem. I turned it off thinking I could update it later. I did triple check all the connections. One option is to call Charter and see if they can trouble shoot it.

The local PC at my PC store tech said to look at the internet settings I currently have with Vista. I’m not sure where to look to look in Network with Vista.

The only thing I can think of is that the modem doesn’t recognize the older PC but the tech said that should be automatic. As for the router, I think maybe some ports can be blocked. I guess I have to go to the Linksys site and configure it.

Please clarify.
The Vista system does not connect and/or WindowsXP system does not connect.
Or are you stating neither connects?

The Windows XP Pro from my older PC won't connect.

Presuming that you are connecting the WindowsXP system via ethernet/network cable,

Disconnect the modem and the router from any power source for about a minute,
Reconnect to power source,
Wait until all lights on the modem is lit signifying that it has connected successfully to Charter.
Connect the XP system to the router and test.

BTW, state the complete model of the Linksys router in question.

Thanks. I was thinking of rebooting everything as I was writing the post...I'll try that. On the bottom of the router is has Linksys Wireless-N Broadband and WRT 160N as the model #. I bought it at least 2 years back to handle my faster speeds.

I'll be on the forum for a little while so test it out now.

While you're doing that, in case it fails to resolve the issue,
I'll be downloading the manual for that router to browse over quickly.

It's 11:00 PM here in cookin' So Calif., time for bed. I'll give it a try in the AM. Only 107 degrees Tuesday!

BTW,
Take a look at the firmware available for that router.
Depending on the revision, e.g. revision 2.0
There appears to have been some serious blunders by Cisco/Linksys that may need to be corrected with a firmware update.
