Post the make and model of the lappy.
We will see if ME drivers can be found for it.
Well that's a thread title I never expected to see :D Actually, I expect that is a slow old dog running XP, with those specs.
Provided you can find the drivers, you can wipe the disk partitions using Delpart:
Delpart
That will leave you with a blank, raw hard drive. You will need to Fdisk and format it, then you can boot up with the WinME CD in the drive and run Setup. Are you OK with doing that, or do you need more detailed help?
Certainly a crawling dog with those specs which I dont intend to upgrade. I have misplaced my original ME disk but I have a second ME disk. I intend to do a clean install. FYI, this lappy has only single partition. I would be much happy and thankful if you can provide me details how to act on those steps. eg. How to Fdisk and format that single partition C harddisk? and how to do the set up? Sorry for the ignorance
You can forget the wipeout part.
Very basic step by step for a single hard drive:

I'm glad you didn't ask what we thought about ME's execution - most of us would be in favor of it!
Why not put on Windows 2000 instead? It's much more stable, its hardware requirements are about the same, and it still has Microsoft extended support through next year - whereas ME's ended a few years ago. Another solution would be to buy a larger hard drive for that laptop.
Of course, if you're trying not to spend any money on this, you'll get your money's worth using ME.
Yes it does as WinMe is in the 98 family.
