My windows XP professional O/S that is installed on my PC is not being recognized .. Keeps telling me to insert the correct disc the inserted disc is wrong . .I know that I have installed sp3 and my store bought XP pro disc is only sp2 .
I do not want to have to format and reinstall unless I am forced to..
what can I do??
What is it that you are trying to do that you need the XP install CD for? If you are trying to run the System File Checker, you will need to create a slipstreamed XP SP3 CD for that to work.
yes I was trying to use sfc /scannow ......
what do you mean by a " slipstreamed XP SP3 CD" ????

If you don't want to do it manually, this is a good utility to take the hard work out of slipstreaming:

And,,if you would like to take all the nags out of running system file checker. After you have service pack 3 slipstreamed on your XP disk. Copy the i386 folder off the disk and into your C:\ folder. Go into the registry to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup : Click the Setup folder to open. In the righthand pane, right click: "ServicePackSourcePath". Click "modify". In the box,type C:\ . Then do the same for the "sourcePath" entry. Exit registry and re-boot.
From then on when you run sfc, it will auto run and not ask for the disk every 5 seconds :rolleyes: Remember to reboot after running sfc...
