RESOLUTIONIt may also be possible to start Windows 95 normally after using the following procedure:
- Boot Windows 95 in Safe mode or to a command prompt.
- Perform one of the following two steps:
- Edit the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files and disable any references to Smartdrv.exe. To disable a line, type rem at the beginning of the line.
- Rename Smartdrv.exe to another name.
- Restart your computer normally.

STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95 and OEM Service Releases. This issue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95 and OSR2:
RMM.PDR version 4.00.1112 (dated 03/10/97) and later
appears to be nothing in autoexec or config.sys to edit
when in dos in the windows folder I type in the exec for windows "win" and says the himem.sys is missing
Do the files exist?
Try the command:dir c:\config.sysIf you get a 'file not found' type error, then it does not exist.
Now try the command:dir c:\autoexec.batIf you get a 'file not found' type error, then it also does not exist.
If either do exist, you could edit them with the commands:edit c:\config.sysoredit c:\autoexec.bat
If you just want to see what's in them, you could do a:type c:\config.sysortype c:\autoexec.bat
Let us know what you see ...
looks like they dont exist
Try the command:dir c:\windows\himem.sysIf you get a 'file not found' type error, then it does not exist.
Found the himem file. I copyed it over into windows ,dos and c: usint rescue disk
Cool. :) Did that solve the "Windows protection error" problem?
sorry but nope
None of that helped
