Wireshark virus

This one is nasty, nasty, nasty!!! Something called Wireshark Anti-Virus has invaded my computer. It's all very official and slick looking and has everything tied up and unuseable. It performs a "scan" and "finds" several "infections" that MUST be cleaned! Of, course the only way to do that is to purchase their software! I can't delete it because I can't open the add/delete feature, AntiMalware Bytes and SuperAntivirusSpyware can't be loaded either. I'm stuck as to what to do. Help. help, help!!!:eek:
ps. IE is the only browser that will start, but I'm wondering if that is their method of spreading the virus?

Malwarebytes will install in Safe mode and if you use safe mode with networking, it will update.

Thanks for that info on Malware Bytes. I will try that next time if it happens again. Do you know if that will also work with Super Anti-Spyware? I think I was able to get rid of it. I ran Bit Defender's online scanner and it got part of it, then I was able to run Malware Bytes which got more of it, then I followed up with Super Anti-Spyware which I believe took care of the rest. Whew! I hope I never see that one again! :DThanks for your help (again)!

The only way to make sure, your computer is clean, is to run all steps from the link provided by Train.

Broni has the right of it. Malwarebytes may not have removed it all.

Well, now I really have problems. I thought that I had gotten rid of the problem only to find that yesterday Wireshark was baaaack! THEN I read the reply and advice about MBAM perhaps not being completely able to remove Wireshark. You think? Anyway I followed the instructions concerning the Wireshark removal process, but I just couldn't seem to get rkill to ever download; I seemed to just end up going in circles. I opened Windows in safe mode and updated MBAM and started a scan. While the scan was running we experienced a power outage. When I opened Windows in safe mode I was greeted by a "Control Center" screen telling me that SUPRISE!!! my computer was infected. Control Center refuses to let me do anything, I can't navigate away from their screen and it won't let me close it out. NO OPTIONS!!! I guess Safe mode isn't. Any ideas on where to go from here? I'm completely shut out of that computer. I really need some good advice. HELP!!:confused:

Well, it may sound cruel, but this is what happens, when you don't listen to our instructions.

Anyway....

Let's see, if we can look at your computer booting from an external source.

Using good computer, please download OTLPE (filesize 120,9 MB)

• When downloaded double click on OTLPENet.exe and make sure there is a blank CD in your CD drive. This will automatically create a bootable CD.
• Reboot your bad computer using the boot CD you just created.
  
  • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
• Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
• Depending on your type of internet connection, you should be able to get online as well so you can access this topic more easily.
• Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
• Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
• OTL should now start.
• Press Run Scan to start the scan.
• When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
• Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
• Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

Before I go any farther, I want to make sure I AM following your instructions precisely. I couldn't download rkill using the link in your earlier reply. I was able to download it at bleepingcomputer.com. Will this be safe to use? I will need to switch computers again as this one does not have a cd writer. Thanks for getting back so quickly. I would be lost without you guys and would have reformatted the HD by now without your help. (and then gotten the same virus and, well you get the idea)

Well, if you want to give this a shot....


I assume, you'll be using USB stick to move some files.
If so....
On good computer...
Download, and run Flash Disinfector, and save it to your desktop.

*Please disable any AV / ScriptBlockers as they might detect Flash Disinfector to be malicious and block it. Hence, the failure in executing. You can enable them back after the cleaning process*

• Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
• The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
• Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.
• Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
• Reboot your computer when done.

Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.

All three tools listed below can be run in safe mode...

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

* Rkill.pif
* Rkill.exe

• * Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  * If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  * A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  * If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  * If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  * Do not reboot until instructed.
  * If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

Now download and run exeHelper.

• * Please download exeHelper from Raktor to your desktop.
  * Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  * A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  * A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
  * Attach the log.txt file to your next message.

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

IMPORTANT! Rename combofix.exe to broni.exe BEFORE moving it to bad computer.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
2. Close any open browsers.
3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
   
   • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
   • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
   
   NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
   NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
   
   • Close any open browsers.
   • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
   • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
   • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

OK, I'm not at all comfortable with disabling anything on a borrowed computer. I can get to one with a cd writer tomorrow. I would rather go that direction while I still have friend who will let me borrow a computer. (My reputation as somewhat less than a computer expert can be a problem sometimes...) :rolleyes: If that works for you, I'll get back after I burn the cd and follow the earlier instructions. BTW, only three of the four versions of rkill would download. I hope that one of those will work out.

I must be doing something wrong. I downloaded OTLPEnet and burned it to a cd. I reset the boot sequence to boot with cdrom. I inserted the cd and restarted the computer, but WindowsXP started instead of the OTLPEN! Where did I mess up?:(

I know the cd player works. The computer I used to burn the cd is running Windows7, the "bad" computer runs XP if that makes any difference.

See, if the CD is bootable on good computer.

What burning program did you use?

It may be a bad download, bad CD, as well.
