Massively multicore is definitely the new "clockspeed race", so there is no doubt how it's going to go in the future. Overkill right at the moment for sure (my 4-core Hyperthreaded Core i7 is never stretched by anything I throw at it), but I think that when the programming tools catch up, then there could be a lot to be said for going massively multicore.
Of course, before massively parallel computing really becomes mainstream, there is the small matter of sorting out these little problems:
Race condition
Deadlock
I can foresee some serious writing needs done.
Not often I even push a 2 core anymore.
