Not Responding

I need some help please. For the past several days I keep getting NOT RESPONDING on just about every page I try to load. If it does load in the it will just sit there saying NOT RESPONDING. I have done the updates, scanned, AV is updated and on. It does it in IE8 and Mozilla. Also once I get logged on and try to open a browser it seems to take forever for it to open and bring up the home page and usually I get the not responding error message. I have checked my start up menu and I have only the basics at startup, AV, WIN, my wirless and mouse. It is almost like I am on a slow dial up.

I downloaded the fix for my system. It is better than it was, I still get not responding, but it rebounds quicker than before. Is there anything else that could be causing it to not respond?

Actually I have noticed this at work as well with all programs not just online sites. I will try the fix at work as well.

What firewall are you using? Did you try disabling it?

Did you flush your dns cache? ipconfig /flushdns

Did you reboot your router and cable modem?

I use the Win firewall with AVG AV. No I did not disable it. I did flush the DNS cache. I did not reboot the router/modem, however I did reboot my computer. I will do this when I get home this afternoon.

Going to do the above here at work and see what happens. Thansk for the help.

1--This might not just be an internet problem. AVG is a huge memory hog. Switch to Avira or Avast, both free.

2--Also, what's in your startup? Run: msconfig>startup tab. Remove any programs you don't want running right from bootup. These lists will help with mysterious ones:

3--Note that the Windows Firewall works in only one direction. Once spyware gets in, it can keep phoning home. I recommend the Comodo firewall, as Zone Alarm is also a memory hog.

4--Run Superantispyware and MalwareBytes AntiMalware, both updated. If you still have problems after that, post in Broni's area:

I would try the second one (Jason Zhou--Dec. 12) first.
And note the suggestion to uninstall any third party toolbar.

Foxy - I have only 4 things checked in my startup, so it is ok there. I think I will get rid of AVG, never cared for it much, but I had issues with a couple others. I will check out the comodo FW as well. Thanks.

Thanks Jim. I reset IE and I did not have any 3rd party tool bars had already uninstalled those a few weeks ago.

I am going to try the comodo FW and maybe a new AV as well. I will post back if issues are resolved or not. I have also scanned with malwarebytes and it found nothing.


Actually, I just looked at comodo and it states it is for SP2 and I have SP3 and run XP Pro. I have not downloaded because i am not sure it it will work with SP3 - any ideas?

1--AVG was excellent for many years, but it's bloated now. What are the other 3?

2--When you install Comodo, DO NOT install their A-V or the Defense feature, just the firewall.

3--Also, how much RAM do you have?

Foxy in the startup I have ALCMTR which is part of Realtek, AVG Tray, Ralink Wireless and something called CLI (I have no clue about CLI so I leave it alone). I have 448 MB of Ram (this is my laptop) but we have some of the same issues on our regular cpu. My laptop does seem to be running more smoothly today, so hopefully it will be ok.

Look up CLI at one of those sites I sent. 448 MB RAM is only half of the bare minimum needed for Win XP. That would be part of your problem.

It said not to disable CLI, so I will just leave it checked. Actually it is running a lot better since I have done all the tweaks you guys have suggested. I will get this AVG off over the weekend, then going to tweak the cpu the same as I did here and change the AVG. Thanks for the help.

I think you meant desktop computer, not CPU. :p The CPU is a small vital part about 2"x2' that runs the whole shebang.
