According to the information I have seen, there is no Microsoft Works 2010. For 2010, Works was replaced with Office 2010 Starter Edition.
Works has always had compatibility issues with Office and other versions of Works.
You may want to verify exactly what program is being used to create the documents, and then see what formats it can save the documents in. Saving as .rtf (Rich Text Format) might work for Word type documents.

Nothing personal, but Works 2001 is an obsolete program. MS Works was always the Orphan Child so to speak. The cheap version for people that do not want to pay for MS Office. That said, Office is your best bet. Your daughter is enrolled in college and should be able to buy MS Office thru the school at a greatly reduced cost. It is worth looking into, especially since at some time in the future, all files will be in the new 2007 / 2010 Office format and other programs will have issues with them.

Is MS Office 2001 installed on your daughters computer ? ? ? If not, do so. Office allows for installation on 2 computers
with no issues, the logic being a desktop and a laptop. Also if Office 2001 is installed on her computer, then be sure
you also installed the Office Converter Pack on her computer. Be sure she Is Not attempting to use
Microsoft Works. That is junk and should be uninstalled. Office is the preferred way to go. Note Office 2001 is also known as Office XP
Office converter pack download:

Also be sure Office is updated to the latest Service Pack ... Office SP3

SP3 for Office should be installed before the Office Converter is installed

OK so it has Office 2002 which is good. You need to check if the Office Convverter I linked to above is installed or not. If not install it. It would also help to know what file format she can not open. Some people use a program called Open Office whos format which is not directly viewable in MS Office without another type of converter. Others may be using Word 2007 format (.docx) which needs the converter linked to in order to work with the files.
