IE9 and XP

I just read that Microsoft plans to make IE9 incompatible with Windows XP!

If that is going to happen, I will change permanently to Firefox/Opera or Chrome. What are these academic idiots in Redmond doing. Why not have IE9 compatible with XP??? Obviously, they like to force everyone to upgrade to W7 (or VISTA [which itself is utterly uselesss]).

I like XP on my present desktop and I do not plan to upgrade even though I upgraded from VISTA to W7 on my laptop. XP works great and fulfills all needs. I would also say that W7 is not bad at all but it is not necessary to spend money on W7 when XP does the trick.

XP is great but all things considered – it’s a Dinosaur. Approximately how many more years would like XP supported?

I have read this on CNET newsletter that I receive. Unfdortunately, I killed that newsletter.

I am happy with IE8 and would like to see all features of IE8 in IE9 and compatibility with XP, that's it. What I do not want to see is a complete change like I experienced with VISTA (which I hate to the bones). If they are coming up with improvements, i.e. making IE9 faster etc., that's also fine with me.

I have a bit of a problem with Firefox (3.6) because on occasions it stops for no apparent reason but I am going to solve that issue sometime.

They cannot make IE9 compatible with XP. It's a 10-year old OS, and it doesn't have things in it which are needed for HTML5.

Lets face it. While it probably made them the most money they ever made with an OS, XP is yesterday's news for them. The only reason they support for security updates is because of the outcry they would have to deal with, especially from businesses. But as time marches on, there will be less grumbling. So for this and reasons like Nick's, they don't concern themselves with supporting new apps for it...

It's a dinosaur because it doesn't do WHAT----? :D Works fine with all my stuff, and I'm no dinosaur.

And who needs IE altogether? I've never used it except for MS Updates page and maybe 2 or 3 websites that don't render properly in FF.Before that I used Netscape. Can you list ONE other feature on any IE that you must have?

I do like the feature where you can reopen closed tabs. I wish FF had that.

Tab Mix Plus has had that feature for a long time. The default is for the last 5 tabs, but you can set the history higher. Definitely one of the "must install" add-ons for me.

Yup, TabMixPlus goes on all of my personal PCs. Gives you MUCH greater control of tabs, not just reopening closed ones.

Opera's had that for years.

Seriously, though.....as much as people are used to XP you can only do so much on the basic platform before its architectural limitations become too expensive to modify. I understand the attraction XP has (I share it) but heck, we don't drive Packards anymore and Lucky Strike Green went to war. Things do change. If you don't believe me, go back through the archives about six or seven years - this same conversation was being held about Win 98 when XP was new.;)

It makes me smile sometimes, to hear WinXP described in such loving terms, when I think back to how XP used to get slagged off in the early days.

Try the standard diagnostic: Try running FF in Safe Mode, not Windows Safe Mode, but Firefox Safe Mode. See if it still stalls, and get back to me.
