XP - SP3 Partial Install "Access is Denied"
I never did install SP3 (KB936929) for my IE6 with SP2, which is running on XP-Home. I am the sole user and the Admin. Now that Microsoft is doing away with support for IE6 I thought I'd install SP3 and then upgrade to IE7. Well, I can't even install SP3.
I see that many people have had problems installing SP3. I have done everything I can think of - all the fixes and tips, but I continue to get "Access is Denied" after the Wizard installs about 50% of the SP3 files...then it has to delete the new files and re-install the old ones and restart..and I'm back to square one again. I must have tried to intstall SP3 two dozen times.
I turned off my Anti-Virus, Ad-Aware and Malwarebytes
I stopped or disabled services that aren't needed
I rebooted for a fresh start
I first used Windows Update for the KB936929 SP3 install (Access Denied)
I downloaded KB936929 as a stand-alone and tried installing (Access Denied)
I used Dail-a-fix to repair permissions and tried again (Access Denied)
I used KB949377 to install the Subinacl.exe file - ran the batch to reset the registry and file permissions (Access Denied)
I checked to see if I had MS XML 6.0, or MS Shared Computer Toolkit, or Remote Desktop Connection installed (Did Not)
On Windows Update History the KB936929 SP3 file shows it failed to install (numerous times!) - Error Code: 0x80070005
When I ran the Command check to find what failed it said INF Registry Failed - Install Error 0x5
I've run out of possible fixes and tips. In searching this problem I see that some people finally were able to install SP3 while others couldn't and just give up. I guess it all depends on each individual computer and its configuration, registry changes, etc.
Does anyone have any ideas that I haven't already tried to install KB936929 SP3 for XP?
