[RESOLVED] CPU and Memory Upgrade Problems

I have tried to upgrade my AND Athlon X2 processor to a faster one. also, wanted install new memory (2 sticks of 2GB Corsair XMS2). When I restared got 1 beep then black screen. HD light flashing but would not continue booting.

Tried new processor with old memory and same result. Tried old processor with new memory and same result.

Re-installed both old processsor and old 2GB of memory with same result.

Left computer unplugged from power source for about 1-2 hours and it rebooted normally.

What steps am I missing that will not let me install either more memory or a new processor? Running XP Pro on a ASROCK AliveNF6G-VST MB.

It's possible that the faster CPU may require a BIOS update first. As Steve says, posting more details would help.

Memory is Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C5 http://www.corsair.com/configurator/...aspx?id=155225

CPU is AMD Athlon X2 6000 (3.1 GHz True Dual - Core Design) So far I am unable to come up with a link.

What I would suggest is that you update the BIOS to the latest version, then in the BIOS Setup, choose "Load fail-safe defaults". Then swap out the CPU for the new one, but leave the old RAM in. If that boots up OK, then you can try changing the RAM modules.

Be sure to cross reference the BIOS version you have to see if the cpu will work.

I updated the bios to 2.20 and everything was running fine with old CPU.I then changed out the CPU and the computer just cycles when trying to boot saying it didn't shut down properly. I have tried all of the chioces (safe mode, etc.) and they all just recycle.

I put the old CPU back in and it is doing the same now. Clearing Cmos did notg help.

Unfortunately that can happen when you upgrade hardware, because Windows writes a Hardware Abstraction Layer when it is first installed, changing hardware subsequently can upset things. All is not lost though, all you need to do is a repair install and Windows will write a new HAL.

Seems to be working just fine now with the new processor and new 4GB of memory.
