[RESOLVED] View Available Wireless Networks Problem Solved
I recenty had a weird problem with a Toshiba A105 laptop that had its wireless configuration managed by Windows. The wireless network icon would show up on the toolbar by the clock and would say "Wireless Networks Available". Yet when I would open up View Available Wireless Networks the Choose A Wireless Network field would be empty.
In this case the laptop was 2 feet away from the wireless router. The wireless adapter managed by Windows requires 2 services to be running in Adminstrative Tools/ Services. One is called Event Log and the other is called Wireless Zero Configuration.
In this case the Event Log service on the Toshiba was stopped. If I would try to start it I would get an error that said something about error loading module.
To fix this problem what I did was go to another working Windows XP machine. In the C:\Windows\system32 folder there is a .dll called eventlog.dll and I copied that file onto a flash drive.
I then pasted that file into the system32 folder of the Toshiba laptop and overwrote that eventlog.dll file. I was then able to start the Event Log service on the Toshiba without getting an error.
I then stopped the Wireless Zero Configuration service in Services and then I restarted it. It was then that my "Choose A Wireless Network" started working again. The field is now populated with wireless networks to connect to.
I suspect malware originally is what corrupted the event log service on the Toshiba. I wanted to post this out there in case anybody else has the same problem.
