Anyone found a subsitute for the MS icon? I really miss the animated network activity in the new blank version. I've seen a few programs that monitor data TxRx but few are free and none that I've seen has a small systray activity icon.

Another highly useful feature removed by M$. Maybe the CPU processing power it required was given to Aero. So far I haven't seen any decent 3rd party replacement, although I'm sure someone is working on one now. Let us know if you eventually find one.
This freebie seems to work.. Lanlights

It does more than the old systray icon used to.. eg- keeps track of throughput details and has options for traceroute and ping/resolve DNS but it doesn't seem to impact resources too much. Takes up about 3-4megs of ram and little processor requirements. I'll play with it for a couple of days and update again.
EDIT- it uses about 2% CPU while running. Not so bad I guess but ~2% more than the old xp type systray icon. I can't imagine any third party program using much less, realistically, but I'll keep looking 'round.
2nd EDIT- the ping and tracert don't seem to work so well in Windows 7.. it freezes up the program but the icon and throughput data seems ok. As I said... I'll keep looking.
There's a sidebar gadget here:

Personally I'm spoilt, I just open Task Manager or Resource Monitor on my secondary monitor. Then I get very frustrated whenever I have to use a rig with only one monitor.
Well I'm spoilt too. I've mentioned before that I run three Monitors. Normally I have my Email on my left one, the Performance graph on the right one and surf and use programs on the main middle one and shift whatever I want overtop the left and right as needed. I guess I'm double spoilt, I'd go nutz if I had to use one Monitor.
Thanks SS that one looks useful. I'll try it out.
I'm getting very used to my 2nd monitor too... now that I have two lcd monitors as opposed to one lcd and a crt as my secondary I leave the 2nd on all the time and use it far more often.
