WEBCam question?

I got talked into toying with a webcam, and it works to a certain degree.I only use it with one person, and we are not in the same time zones and other mitigating factors that makes it difficult to check. Any way, i can open the webcam see and hear it functioning, he can also. On my end the webcam video does not load in windows live messenger, i can see and hear mim he can see and hear me. The webcam has an ignition key type symbol with a red x by it. In the settings drop down there are various things listed, skype,aol msngr msngrs " 2 different catergories" "spelling" the window says to add or delete a video effects. Is there one of these that unlocks this on my end? There is no windows live messenger listed. There are various other things listed, i think some are related to QuickCam also, does one of those need be listed in that settings area? Thats the logitech interface not windows live/
Logitechj QuickCam Plus 3500 E, WITH VISTA HOME PREMIUM, I have been to logitech but that is not a good experience,

Any suggestions?

Is the video suppoased to show me on my end he says his does,, i can see him yes , but my webcam as above.
