Every time I click on an image file to open it, I receive an open file security warning message. How can I stop this message from appearing?
Also, sometimes when I download a file into a folder while I have the folder opened in windows explorer, the file will not appear in that folder after the download is completed. If I click on another folder and go back to that folder where I saved the download, I will see the file. Why does this occur some of the time?
Some additional information might be helpful.
On question one - where is the file you are clicking on Windows Explorer or INternet Explorer? Server operating systems have more security enabled by defauly, especially in Internet Explorer. An exact copy of the error message you receive would also be helpful. You could post a screen capture.
On question 2 - is the folder on a local drive or a network drive? Hard drive or other device? It could be that the folder contents have not been refreshed.

Question 1: Windows Explorer. A box pops up after clicking on a file that is titled open file - security warning. Then below in the box it asks do you want to open this file? Below that is a box that you can check or uncheck that says always ask before opening this file. I uncheck that box and I still receive this message when opening files.
Question 2: Local drive. My system is not connected to a server. It is a hard drive.
Another issue I have is in display/screen saver setting, below under monitor power and click on power, under the settings for always on power scheme, I have the turn off monitor set to 10 minutes. Sometimes this setting works and my monitor turns black and other times (more often than not), my monitor stays on and running. Why doesn't this setting work most of the time? It seems like if I reapply the setting and leave my computer, it works but if I surf the net or do other stuff on it and leave, the monitor is still on when I come back later on.
I'm assuming you mean 2003 server, not 2000.

add .exe and other file types you want excluded.
2) instead of fussing with the windows power management, use monitores to turn off the monitor when you lock the workstation or press ctrl+F2

Hi Midknyte. Is this how I add file types in the specify box? eg. .exe .jpg .gif .bmp .avi
or must they be followed by a comma after each file type?
eg. .exe, .jpg, .gif, .bmp, .avi
I downloaded that monitores program. I am not sure how I get it to work? From what I read, it looks like it will shut off all running programs that may be running on computer as well as the monitor? If I am downloading a file from a friend and walk away, it will terminate the download also? I just want to have my monitor shut down and not effect anything that my hard drive or computer may be doing at the time.
I think you just add a ,. I don't disable it on my system, so you'll have to just test it out.
All you need to do is put it in a folder, run it and set it to autostart. No installation required. I usually put it in C:\Program Files\Monitores
It doesn't shut down apps. Where are you reading that? It is only meant to turn off the monitor.

Midknyte, I think it shows that you use a colon and not a comma. Below is what I have typed in the specify box and I still am receiving that open file security warning message box.

I downloaded and installed the monitorES program. I don't have my system set with a password that I have to type in every time I log into windows since I am the only one who uses this computer. It looks like I have to create a password to use this monitores which would mean I would have to type a password in every time I boot or log into windows? I imagine that is what they mean when you lock your computer? I never used the lock feature in windows.

Question #2 Maybe I am just showing ignorance here. On my PC having a folder open when I download a file has nothing to do where the file goes. That is determined by the location I nominate in the Save In line of the Save As screen.
#1 If my method didn't work, you can try the other techniques that Welshjim suggested.
#2 You shouldn't have to create a password. If you just want to turn off the monitor, you can use the ctrl+F2 combination that i mentioned in my first post. Windows key + L will lock the workstation. If the account doesn't have a password, just press ctrl+alt+del and hit enter (blank password)
Midknyte, I got monitores program to work now. Control + F2 Key did the trick. That works much better than using the in windows. You are such a big help, as well as, others. I thank you much. :)
Since I leave my computer on 24/7 and use it off and on throughout the day, is using a program like monitores the best way to prolong the life of my monitor and reduce energy costs, as well?
Welshjim, I think you misunderstood what I meant. LOL You aren't showing any ignorance. :) Perhaps, I didn't explain it well enough. What I meant is that when I have windows explorer opened to a folder where I am going to save a file, the file usually appears in that folder after I select that folder to save the file. What I meant is that I don't have to refresh the folder to see that file listed after saving it. Does that make more sense? But, sometimes I have to refresh the folder to see the file. I was wondering why this occurs sometimes.
As for the open file - security warning message I receive after clicking on a file issue? I still receive that message after trying your methods and Midknytes providing it followed the instructions correctly. I don't know why I can't prevent this message from appearing.

In spite of your best efforts, Windows may move the file around that folder. Choose View|Arrange Icons By to hopefully restore things to the way you like. There is a more complicated answer, but unless the above does not work, let's not worry about it.Quote:

Sometimes when I use the monitor power feature in windows to turn off my monitor after xxxx minutes and I use my computer later, my monitor stays off until I move my mouse to turn it back on. This doesn't happen often but, it has happened numerous times. The only way I get to turn my monitor back on is to reboot my system when this occurs. I just started using monitores program and this same situation occurred using it. Does anyone know what causes this to do this sometimes?
Welshjim, I already looked at all the files in the folder searching for the file I just saved and it's wasn't listed anywhere. The only way I can see it listed is when I click on another folder and click back to the folder where I originally saved the file. Like I said, this doesn't happen all the time. It's not a big issue but, I thought maybe there was a simple solution.
JLS--Windows can only remember so many settings.
Use TweakUI for Win XP. I assume this will work for Win2003 Server.

When installed, click (in the left panel) Explorer|Customizations. Change the number in the "Folders to Remember" line to at least 2000 (some people go to 5000--the only difference is hard drive space and the difference is small unless you have a really small drive).
Welshjim, was the tweakiu program pertaining to my monitor power feature issue? If it was, I downloaded and changed that setting to 5000 and I couldn't wake up my monitor by moving the mouse again after monitores program turned it off. I wish I knew why this happens sometimes. If anyone knows, I would appreciate the help.

If that has affected your monitor, I am really embarrassed. TweakUI for WinXP is supposed to work with Win2003 Server.
Do you have System Restore activated? If so you should consider using it to a time before making the change with TweakUI.
Or you could consider reinstalling your monitor. At least try unplugging it, waiting a minute and replugging it.
