Video driver update

Ok i was looking for a thread i posted a couple of weeks ago and since i cannot find it, i will start this one.

I had problems with using Camtasia and Jing recording programs. I contacted their tech support and from various diagnostic tests, they concluded this:

your computer hardware meets the minimum system requirements, however your software (audio and video device drivers) are very significantly outdated, and this is why your computer will not work with multimedia recording applications such as Jing and Camtasia Studio.

It looks like this might be a custom-built computer, or it has been recently reformatted. It does not have the correct drivers loaded for your audio and video cards, so the performance of these devices is likely to be very poor.

It does not appear that you have a physical (dedicated) video card or a sound card installed on this computer -- currently you are using the integrated devices on your motherboard.


If you are able to find current drivers for your on-board devices this may help to improve performance and allow you to work with our software. If you are not able to obtain these updates, you may benefit from upgrading to a dedicated video card and audio card.

I have no reason to doubt what he said but i would like to know how i can check those. I had a new hard drive installed a few months ago and maybe that is what make it looks like it was formatted? because i know i didn`t format it myself, at least not the new HD. So could you simply direct me to see where to check and such?

All you need to do is go to your User CP at the top of page in Virtual Dr. You'll then either see all the threads you've posted in, or you can click on "find all posts by your name."

As for your driver problem, how did they know you don't have the correct ones installed? Did you allow them access to your computer?
I wouldn't have.

What computer do you have? The new drive you had installed, who did this and is it the main drive where someone else installed your operating system? If this is the case, it's possible they loaded older drivers. You can check via your computer manufacturer, where the lastest drivers should be listed.

OK i had searched but probably the wrong way.

Anyways, for my computer, NO i never gave them access. I just ran dxdiag from my computer and sent a save file. The new drive was installed by a tech (where i always go), and yes it is the main drive where everything is installed. I have a Compaq Presario computer. When you say to check the computer manufacturer, do you mean online or on my actual computer? And either way, where do i get the info on what i have? If i go in the system properties, i go to the hardware, and drivers. But there, i dont know what all that means. Any guide around?

Which Presario? Give me a model number and I'll help you find which drivers you need. I'm wondering if the tech just installed drivers from the disks that came with the computer, or did he go online to HP and get the lastest showing for your computer. And if your video and sound/audio are built into the motherboard, this also can be a reason it isn't working well.

Do you know if this tech installed the drivers? Or if he/she used Windows drivers? HP doesn't show any newer drivers and the ones there are from 2005.

Although, I'm going out on limb here and say that onboard video and sound are just not the good for the things you want to do. When that company said your drivers needed updating, I bet they meant you need better equipment too. Reading back to what you said they said, it says your computer meets the minimum. And minimum is never good. Just like game playing, if yours or my computer only met the minimum requirements, then that's what you would expect the computer to do, play or work at minimum performance.

Thanks for the info. I kind of suspected that (i just didn`t know how to confirm it). Fortunately for me, other screen capture programs (namely CamStudio), seem to work ok with my computer hardware.

HP says this computer came with only 512mb of memory. Have you ever upgraded that? If so,never mind, but if you haven't you might consider adding the other 512mb it can hold.

You have no AGP slot for a better quality Video card, but you do have three PCI slots, and though they are not as good as an AGP slot, you can buy PCI slot video cards, which would improve the performance a lot. Also, the audio is fine, I use my onboard for video capturing, and it works just fine.

If I had the same computer as yours, I'd consider upgrading it a bit.

OH yeah, when i added a 200GB HD i also added 1GB RAM to it. I'll look at the $$ for a PCI video card in the mean time.

Thanks for the link. Do you think it is something i could add on my own (i am not very techie but i can follow instructions), or should i ask a technician to install this?

Does your computer have just PCI slots or is there PCIe? Important to know for installing a video card.
