[RESOLVED] cpu dead

I have a Gateway GX7022E desktop and the cpu is dying. Gateway will not tell me which cpu I can upgrade to because its out of warranty. They keep telling me to call the $2.95 a minute # for the info that I need. The mobo is intel D945GBI frontside bus 1066 800 533. It has a pentium d 830 at the moment LGA 775 socket win xp sp3. I purchased an intel E7500 2.93GHZ dual core Wolfdale and it will not boot up. Is this cpu compatible with mu board. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Scottie Scruggs

Most CPU's don't die that easily. How do you know it's the cpu and not something else, like the power supply or ram or motherboard.

Could you please explain the problem then we can help you figure out what is really wrong.

The cpu is running around 165 degrees f and it will not cool down. The system will not boot fully and it is using 100% of resources after 10 minutes no change. It has been booting slowly for the last 6 months or so.

Have you ever changed the heatsink grease? That would cool the cpu down. CPU temps are measured in Celsius not F, so 165 degrees F is only 73 degrees Celsius, not really enough to kill the cpu. You should also clean out any dust accumulated in the last 6 months. If the heatsink is clogged with dust, it would cause the computer to run hot.


And the slowness could be due to malware/spyware on your computer.

CPUs will also throttle down if they get too hot. Pentium Ds run hot anyway.

Clean the heatsink fan, apply new thermal paste, and make sure that the heatsink is flush against the top of the cpu.

Sometimes you need to update the BIOS in order to use a newer CPU (difficult when you can't even boot).

cleaned everything and replaced artic silver on cpu. As far as malware and such I am running trend micro, superantispyware,malwarebytes,and dr.web 2 or 3 times a week. Now if I leave it running it will reboot on it's on and freeze up. I ordered the wrong cpu for m system any way, I needed 90 nm but I ordered 45nm cpu. oops

Someone suggested reformatting the hard drive. Would that be something to consider or is this a hardware issue.

Usually, if a CPU dies, the system won't boot at all. More likely possibilities in clude the power supply, and the motherboard or memory. It might be time to run some memory diagnostics, and check the motherboard for bad capacitors. Running the hard drive manufacturer's disgnostics couldn't hurt either.

The system will not load all programs to run before it reboots. I don't know how I can run diagnostics in this situation.

What happens if you power up the computer, and go into the BIOS setup? Does it stay there indefinitely, or does it reboot from the BIOS setup also? WHile you are in the BIOS, check the temperatures and voltages if your BIOS has those capabilities.

You wouldn't run hardware diags from Windows. Download UBCD from the link in my sig. Run Memtest86+ and your hard drive manufacturer's diags (or seatools if you don't know)

After running harddrive diagnostics it is running better but not 100%. Ran UBCD and memtest86+ but have'nt found anything yet. How is the best way to update my bios. It is still slow booting up and it still takes it about 2 minutes to close everything down and restart. Usually it only takes about 10 seconds. Would the bios cause this.
