If the OS is 64-bit, then the hardware has to support 64-bit as well. So yes, the CPU and motherboard are 64-bit capable.
Thanks for the answer. Just trying to learn a little something.
Still in the learing mode, does the 64 bit "fully" support and run 32 bit programs? 32 bit will not run 64 bit programs---right?
64-bit Windows emulates 32-bit (aka Windows On Windows 64).

A 32-bit OS cannot run 64-bit apps.
Thank for your reply. So with all the flap over buying a 64 bit computer should not scare us away from buying such a computer because it will run our present 32bit programs quiet well. :D
For the most part, 32-bit apps will work unless there is some specific hardware driver or other requirement that can't run on 64-bit. It's best to check with the manufacturer to ensure compatibility.

After reading your replies, I am reminded of what a good friend told me about the subject but I did not recall the answer in detail.
Thanks for the informative link Doc, I'll be keeping that handy.
Thanks for allowing me to share your thread squid. Maybe you picked up on some of what was said. I am satisfied with answers given for the questions I asked.
Buf I think we both learned something good today.
Beyond a doubt!!!
Just out of curiosity (in hopes of learning something new) I followed the instructions on how to find out weather your PC was 32 or 64 Bit. I looked in the control panel, system, as suggested and it says I have a 32 bit operating system. All this time I thought I had a 64 bit because on the front of my computer, down at the bottom of it, it says, AMD with 64 beneath it and under 64 it says, Athlon X2. I have a Dell Inspiron 531, Vista Home Addition. So which do I really have-a 32 or a 64?
Thanks,
AMD64 is 64-bit CAPABLE, but you can run 32-bit OSes on it as well. So you probably have 32-bit.
