Can a Win7 upgrade install over vista premium be uninstalled and return to vista?
It's possible, but it would be much easier and cleaner to just restore your backup of Vista. You are making backups of Vista, right? If you're not, then that's a whole other problem.

When you installed Windows 7 over Vista, did you select 1) "new" installation or 2) the "upgrade" option?
- If you installed Windows 7 as a "new" installation over Windows Vista, (or XP, or 7), the Windows 7 installation routine will have created a "Windows.old" folder that contains your previous operating system and personal files. This "Windows.old" folder is in the root of the Windows partition.
How to restore a Windows 7-based computer to a previous Windows installation by using the Windows.old folderWarning: Restoring your previous operating system by using the Windows.old folder does not keep any files or settings from the current installation.

- If you selected the "upgrade" option, (instead of "new"), then there is no previous operating system to which you can revert.
In other words:New = saves a backup copy of your old Windows installation in \Windows\Windows.old
Upgrade = overwrites your old Windows installation, (no backup)
