System restore keeps getting blown away....

I recently partnered with an IT fellow at Garmin Industries that headquarters close to my home, & we constructed a new i7, 920 desktop with 2) HD's....both WD Raptors....both 80% or better free.
No....I am not bicyling to (or) in France. :rolleyes:

To the point as best I can:

I'm having a helluva time with my restore points disappearing. :confused:

I actually needed one the other night when I was cleaning out my documents (really needed one) :mad:, and ran across a Windows Theme File that I didn't recognize.

So....being the curious type I am, I quickly scanned it, opened it and WHAM.....all my desktop themes I spent hours getting set like I wanted were gone.
Problem: All and Any Restore Points were too.

I'm running x64 Vista Ultimate (oem, no disc) on the problematic HD, and 32 bit XP Pro on the other.

I am not proficient with Vista, (nor RAID tools) and hoping to skip over it, go to "7", and not have to sweat the learning curve.....much like I skipped Windows Me-stake.

When I open the 'puter and go into XP, check my restore....they're fine.

Then I boot into Vista: they're gone .....again. :mad:

What in the world am I doing wrong, Please?

I know I have a fubared version of Vista because I'm in this endless loop trying to install SP-2 and that 1 hour download takes me to the You need Readiness download, and then back to You need SP-2.

This really stuns me.
Microsoft has been working with me for a couple of weeks on this, and surrendered too.

They are.....Sending Me (unreal) a new retail version of Vista x64 Ultimate!

Back to the original topic....what is going on with my Restore Points ?, or should I just be patient and wait until my new DVD arrives?

If you were me, would you wait until I get the new Vista disc and install it (or) do that now?

That is one of the things that entered my mind.

Here's what I'm using so far for protection:

Kaspersky Labs Internet Security 2010, updated and scanned daily.
SUPERantispyware...same
Malwarebytes...same
SpywareBlaster.
Windows Defender, updated and fully scanned weekly.

I have run Bit Defender and Panda scans from a sticky from Dude111:

I come up virus/malicious threat free.

In Security, I do have User Account Control turned off.
The constant pop-ups drove me nuts.

If you still think I ought to do that, and have the time, please post a reply and I'll do that.

And I did full scans & set one up yesterday at 8:00 PM. :mad:

I have checked all cleaning utilities and none of those have System Restore ticked.

I'll do a hi-jack this if you still think that's appropriate, now.

My only security hole I know of is the lack of SP-2 for Vista x64.

I have understood you have scanned with all those antimalware programs and found nothing. Scanning with HiJackThis won't hurt, but it seems unlikely it will find anything.
If malware is not the problem, and those three links do not help, I must confess to not knowing what further to suggest.

That is what Micro$oft says too.
That is also the reason I waited to close this.....to see what they said.
I have 5) more free cases I can do with them I guess, and then 6) more when I get those discs.
