I have 2 year old Gateway laptop with Window XP. For a year, the touch pad sometimes malfunctions. I have a mouse that I use. Lately, my computer who not recognize the mouse.
Either the computer has the error saying USB for the mouse is not recognized or the cursor controlled by the mouse disappears off the screen.
What is going on here?
Which OS?

Shoot! I read right over that part. Sorry.
Ok, Boot to Safe Mode, (restart computer, and begin tapping the F8 key as soon as you see the first screen) then go into device manager, find your USB hubs and remove them, then restart the computer. Windows will reinstall them, fixing any that may have become corrupted. If that doesn't work, post back and we'll try something else.

I'm seems to be working for the moment. I have to wait and see if it holds.

You might also check in Setup that USB mouse is enabled.
For you touchpad, have you tried reinstalling the drivers for it?
The USB mouse is enabled. I don't know anything about the drivers for the touchpad.
What's the model number on that Gateway? Perhaps I can find some drivers for you.
It's a Model MA3.
The mouse is back to malfunctioning.
Have you got another mouse you can try? It is possible that the mouse is bad.

This is the only mouse that I have. No money for another one.
I am trying out the driver that you suggested right now. Let's see what happens.

I can't even afford the ones that you suggested.
BTW I downloaded the touchpad driver. Nothing is that different. I still have to use the malfunctioning mouse from time to time.
Did you uninstall the previous old driver before installing the new one?
