I am running WIN XP MCE 2002 on my Dell laptop. I have a new copy of Vista Ultimate with SP1 for Upgrade only disk. I've had the disk nearly 1 year, attempted this before but gave up. Didn't want Vista that bad.
Anyway when I run the disk it begins to install, gets to the point where I put in the key then stops. Something about not being able to install.
How can I get this Upgrade to work? I really don't want to clean install if I don't have to.

Are XP and Vista BOTH the same 32 bit or 64 bit versions? You can't mix and match the "bit" versions...Have to do a clean install.
Yes both are 32 bit.
I tried to install from my XP Desktop first today. It went through the steps to the point where I enter the Product Key. After entering I see drive activity (flashing light) for about 1 min. Then get a popup window.
"Install Windows; Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessable and restart the installation. Error code 0X0000005."
OK, only option.
I also tried to install from the Vista disk on Boot.
Again goes through the steps to Product Key. then Accept Terms. After that it fails.
"Upgrade has been disabled, to upgrade start the installation from Windows."
Only option from this page is a Clean Install or stop install.
Course that one means you must upgrade from within windows...Quote:

You can google: Error code 0X0000005
and see that you're not alone...maybe find a solution.
I'd blow the dust out of the cd/dvd drive and make sure the cd/dvd is also clean and try again.
Thanks Steve. I've cleaned the drive and disk and another failed attempt. This seems to point to my DVD drive. Can I copy the Vista disk to my Hard drive and run it from there? Or is there some other way to run the installer? My DVD drive seems to work fine with all other disks and burns disks OK.
Google search was less than helpfull to me. But I'm not very lucky with Google search's.
I got it figured out. Ran the Upgrade adviser and it pointed to my bluetooth adapter. Uninstalled it and the install went through. Running Vista now. Now I can upgrade to WIN 7.
