[RESOLVED] Wireless Router Advice

I'm thinking about getting a wireless router to replace my Linksys wired router I have now. There will be three computers on this network, 2 wired, and one wireless MacBook.

I don't need anything fancy because this network will just be used for simple web surfing, no heavy downloading or a lot of streaming. The wireless computer will usually be situated within 30 ft. line of sight when in use.

I understand the latest and greatest in the N+ technology, right? I really can't see the need for the extra cost of this, compared to a solid G router. The two wired computers wouldn't take any hit in surfing speed with this set-up, would they?

I'm thinking of getting the Linksys WRT54G. Based on everything I've read about it, including user reviews, it seems to fit my situation the best...for the price.

I'm also assuming the Mac's AirPort will be compatible with this router.

Anybody have any advice...pro's or con's?

Get the WRT54GL. It has all the features and capabilities of the WRT54G, and additionally is compatible with free Linux-based firmware upgrades such as DDWRT and Tomato. It's still quite reasonably priced.

Even out of the box, your wired connections should be 100Mbps, very satisfactory.

Actually after doing a little more research since I posted, I did find the WRT54GL description/review and decided it would be a better choice :D.

I can get it for about $50, so it's well within my price range.

My only question now is, since my wife's MacBook is being added to the network mix, will the AirPort be compatible? I'm thinking there shouldn't be a problem, but I just want to make sure before I buy and set it up.

She's be able to piggyback somebody's unsecured connection :o here in the neighborhood, but I hate doing that so I want to fix that situation.

And HOWDY to a fellow Floridian. Gotta love this 100° heat we've been having lately, huh?

I can't speak from experience about the Mac, but that router works with every Linux distro I've tried so I'd imagine it would work OK.

The heat's something else, but the winters make up for it.:)

I decided to go with the Linksys WRT110 :). I found it for about $45 and it claims "Entry-Level N" which I've discovered is not really N, but stronger than G. I figured what the heck.

Set it up in 10 minutes, got the MacBook surfing and it seems to be working fine.

I just wanted to make sure I have all the security measures set up properly.

I enabled MAC filtering to allow only the MAC address of the wireless computer.
WPA-2 Enabled.
NAT enabled.
SPI enabled.
Changed the default SSID.
Changed the default P/W.

Is there anything I'm missing here?
