Intermitant file copying
I hav just installed win98se on my HewlettPackard PC from scratch because the PC was unrelibale with the rubbish they put on it. But now when copying files from one location/folder to another it is now taking 3 times as long as b4 and now the mouse Intermitantly freezes for a couple of seconds then OK for 5 secs then freezes again while copying. while the mouse freezes also so does everything else on the screen and the HDD light is fixed on permantly rather than flickering.
it also does the same thing on file tranfer accross the network aswell.
the strangest thing about it is that if i install win98 first edition everything is OK, apart from a power management prob which is cured with winSE (thats y i wan't SE installed)
any1 got any ideas, i've kept it as short as poss so just ask if u need any more info.
Many thanx in advance for your help! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

when installing win98 SE i used the same drivers n stuff as i did for first edition.
but i am unsure about motherboard drivers etc, i do not have a clue about wether or not i need these but i guess since first edition installs ok then i shouldn't need 'em
all input apreciated :0

Hi,
Does your Mobo have a Via chipset, if it does have you installed the 4in1 drivers?
-
I'm not sure about VIA chipset...how can i find out what i have?
Also as i said every thing is fine when i install first edition, WHY? this is confusing, if anything i would think SE should have more compability...
My next attempt will have to be try winME if i cant get SE to work but i have herd bad things about ME so i dont really wanna do this.
Could there be any other patches/drivers that i need to install windoze on a AMD machine...
Cheers

Have a look at system devices in device manager and see if the word Via comes up, if it does then download the 4in1 drivers ver 4.29 from www.via.com.tw

Yes it does say via in there under system "VIA Tech VT82C686 Power Management Controler", but since because of help from another post on here i have found out that my PC has a AMD 751 (Irongate) chipset, and as far as i can work only the driver i can upgrade is the AGP driver.
but anyway i have also been told to enable DMA on my drives as this isn't enabled as standard with SE on my PC as it is with first edition
When i enabled DMA this sorted out the file transfer speed
thanks for all your help, its most apreciated its helped me to sort my pc in less than a day...i've tried for many days over the space of a month, thanx all https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
