Hard-Drive Clicking- Nearing Death?

Okay...my hardrive has been clicking since July 08. It has been getting increasingly worse over the past several weeks. I purchased a external hardrive and copied all my files to. I even download Macrium Reflect and copied the entire OS (I think).
When the hardrive begins to click, it temporarily freezes the computer, slows down the processes, and I sometimes have to restart the computer.
My question....
Is there a way that the harddrive can be fixed(rather than replaced)? The PC is only a 1.5 years old. Also, is there a way that I can have it run off the external hardrive as the main HD?

You can't "fix" a hard drive. You cannot run off an external either.

I don't see why you waited this long.

Check out Macrium Reflect to see if it's capable of cloning your old drive to a new one. If so, purchase a new drive and clone your system over. That will save you from doing a complete reinstall.

The longer you wait the more corruption will be on the drive in my experience.
Better get the clone done ASAP.

I agree. ALL hard drives WILL fail. They are mechnical beasts with one or platters spinning at thousands of RPMs and reciprocating head positioners that are rapidly being yanked back and forth. Moving parts cause wear, and when the wear becomes to great, it's "titsup" ("Total Inability To Support Usual Performance"). :( :)

What would cause a HD to breakdown after only 1.5 years of use? Also, I just buy a hardrive adn install it? What about my OS?

Heck I have gotten new hdds that were bad right out of the box. :(

Look in device manager and see what is there about the hdd. Post that information.

We can go from there.

1-1/2 years is a bit soon but, it's definitely not unheard of.

Which make and model hard drive is it? Some have a 5-year warranty.

Yep all moving parts hard drives will fail. This is why I love the fact that SSD drives are coming out. Soon the fail rate on HD will be less than 1%.

I just had a two year old Western Digital drive fail, but it's still under warranty so WD is replaceing the drive for me. Find the drives manufacturer; model and serial number then go to the website of the MFG check on the warranty period. Chances are your drive is still under warranty.

Be aware that all flash memory also has a finite life, a certain number of read/write cycles that the memory cells can withstand without becoming unreliable.
