HELP installing Windows98 SE

I hav just installed win98se on my HewlettPackard PC from scratch because the PC was unrelibale with the rubbish they put on it. But now when copying files from one location/folder to another it is now taking 3 times as long as b4 and now the mouse Intermitantly freezes for a couple of seconds then OK for 5 secs then freezes again while copying. while the mouse freezes also so does everything else on the screen and the HDD light is fixed on permantly rather than flickering.
it also does the same thing on file tranfer accross the network aswell.

the strangest thing about it is that if i install win98 first edition everything is OK, apart from a power management prob which is cured with winSE (thats y i wan't SE installed)

any1 got any ideas, i've kept it as short as poss so just ask if u need any more info.

Could there be any other drivers/patches that i need to install windoze on an AMD machine, when i installed first edition i did not need any extra drivers and it worked OK...did they take sumut away from Win98SE...

Hi. r u serious m8, i'm trying to install windows on a freshly formated drive, i've installed windows first edition a few times and never had trhis prob b4...

It is slow no matter what partition i am copying from, even from cd to hard drive.

my model number is 8730uk

I have used the same drivers to install SE as i did with first edition...as far as i know these r the latest drivers...but there is 1 thing i'm not sure about and thats motherboard drivers, do i need these...i've heard of VIA4in1 drivers but havent used them b4, how do i know if i have a via chipset or not? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

am dont really wanna be upgrading from a recovery cd install as this uses around 1.5gig of space after installing other progs on my c drive and makes backup take up loads of space...

Also because of all the rubbish that hp put on the recovery cd the pc is unrelible with it, thas y i don't just use that! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

i have checked out the hp website and that says it has a AMD 751 (Irongate) chipset...so does this mean via drivers will not work? heres a link to my system specs http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport...Tfile=bph05881

is there simular drivers to the via4in1 that are for my chipset...i dont need any of this for win98 first edition...this is y i am confused! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

You may want to check and see if DMA is enabled on your drive.
IF DMA is disabled it can cause a real slowdown to the system when transfering files.

If it doesn't work hit it with a hammer. If hitting it fixes it great! If it breaks, oh well it didn't work anyway.

For the AMD North Bridge (Irongate) drivers you can go here http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/bin/ and check out the AMD Driver Pack, Version 1.00

aahhh haaaa, thanx alot m8 DMA was not enabled on any of my drives inc. CD ROM...i enabled 'em all and this seems to have sorted out the problem. Thank you to all who have tried to help, this has been bugging me for months and now i've finaly able to use it.

I'll also check out above link aswell to see if i need any of 'em...but would i be right in saying that if it seems to b cool now then i am prob better off leaving it as it is or could these drivers make things even quicker?

when i try to install the above AMD Driver Pack, Version 1.00 all this lets me install is the AGP Driver...all others are set to keep current driver because they r not supported. is this normal should i install agp driver anyway? or just leave it alone?
