Hi,

Take a look at this discussion and see if it helps:

You can also call NetZero and see if someone there can give you the latest info about that.
Thankfully, it's been many years since I had to use dial-up, but if it's all you can get, then good luck!!
Thanks for the reply!
This would be for my Aunts computer. Right now she has M.E. and doesn't want to upgrade or change either to another operating system or dsl/cable. She just wants cheap e-mail. So if it wasn't a big hassle I was just going to install Ubuntu and have her keep Netzero. The discussion is intersting but I don't know if I could do it. I'll think about it.
Is your Aunt currently paying for internet access and is she wanting to not have to pay for that service, and that is why NetZero is being mentioned?
Is she close enough to take adantage of this.

She is in Oregon. She just wants something that works and doesn't take forever and doesn't cost more than $10. Netzero support is basically non existant so I don't know what to do if there is a software problem. I would like to check for a virus or spyware but AVG and AD Aware do not support M.E. anymore or so it says when I try to get them current. I do appreciate the replies.
Before you install Ubuntu Linux check out the system requirements for Ubuntu and the computer your going to install it on. If the computer has a win modem I wouldn't consider Linux till I changed to a hardware modem. Linux does not play nice with win modems. Here's a couple of links for more info:

What is she currently using for her ISP..is it MSN...and how much is she paying each month for access?
Also, what security programs does she have? She really needs a good firewall...it's very important. I don't know about the built in firewall with M.E., but even XP Pro has a lousy one, so I wouldn't put much trust in M.E. either.
Most of us here have quit using AdAware since there are other free, and better programs that work very well.
Here is a site that has some free programs that supposedly will work with M.E.
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/0...nd-windows-me/
It says that ZoneAlarm, versions prior to version 5.5, will work with M.E....but there isn't any support for those versions.
You will see Antivir listed for an anti-virus....it's a good one...lots of us here use it.
For an antispyware, most of us use Spywareblaster..also very good.
Maybe others here can suggest which firewall of the bunch ( Jetico Personal firewall, or Tiny Personal firewall, or an older version of ZoneAlarm), is the better one....or any others that I don't know about or wasn't listed.
I have MSN for my ISP and even when I switch over and use Ubuntu, I can still go to my MSN homepage and use e-mail the same as always. The reason I mentioned that is because if your Aunt wanted to stay with her current ISP, you could install Ubuntu and all she would have to do is just go to her regular homepage and use her e-mail as usual.
I have Ubuntu installed on a second hard drive and XP Pro on the first hard drive. I read that dual booting Ubuntu and a Windows O/S on the same hard drive can sometimes cause boot problems...which can be corrected...but I didn't want to mess with that since that I already had a second hdd available.
But, as you may already know, Ubuntu is much, much safer than Windows. You don't have to have firewalls, spyware programs, anti virus programs ( except to help protect outgoing e-mail to others).
Lots to think about and digest. I'll have to go check out the computer first.
I finally went and checked out the computer and according to your info it would not be a good idea to try and do Ubuntu so my Aunt decided to cancel her internet. She had actually decided to do this before I went over. The main reason is her health as she cannot sit for very long without pain. So, I appreciate all the information and maybe later something will work out.
Thanks!
