AVG 8 Free - Resource Hog?

I have used AVG Free for for some time now. I have noticed that it runs unexpectedly pushing CPU usage to 100%. I have had to install Process Tamer to deal with the problem.

I like AVG free particularly because updating it on my wireless modem at speeds way below 56Kpbs is smooth and quick because the update files are not very large.

Is there any other free antivirus with small update files that is much less a resource hog?

My PC is P4 1.7Ghz.

AVG 8 have been having problems from the very beginning. After years of using AVG, I dumped it with ver. 8.0

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use PC Tools Firewall Plus.
If you decide to install Comodo, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.

I use Comodo Firewall and I find it useful but its Antivirus, I am not sure about.

I prefer Antivir but I just found out that the size of its VDF update is 22.2MB. Too large for easy download on my GPRS modem. There is no internet cafe where I live and its impossible to travel just for the daily update.

Any more suggestions?

The orignal update for both is huge.


Have someone with a laptop get it for you at the library. Or with their desktops.
Put it on a thumbdrive or cd and transfer it.

Agreed that nowadays, the original installation for all AV's are big. But in general (there are occasional exceptions), daily updates for most are now fairly small. I'm on very slow dialup at home and I get along with free Avast quite well. (And AVG 8 (free or paid) is NOT on my short list of AV's I'd use. It's become a bloated beast, IMO.)
