AntiVirus Pop up
I have just been getting this elaborate repeated pop up saying: " Win AntiVirus/XP has expired. Backdoor win32.Hupicon.fixn.. Yes: to activate Win AntiVirus/XP or No: Activate later....... This nonsense just started this evening.... Pop up blocked does not help..........
-
Win AntiVirus/XP is rogue software that is riddled with malware. You can find a lot of info by Googling it. Here's a sample:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malw...antivirus-2008
There's some removal instructions on the link also.
-
Print these instructions out.
NOTE. If any of the programs listed below refuse to run, try renaming executive file to something else; for instance, rename hijackthis.exe to screw_you.exe
1. Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
http://www.superantispyware.com/
* Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
* An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
* If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here: http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html.)
* Close SUPERAntiSpyware.
PHYSICALLY DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET
Restart computer in Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears; select Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen
* Open SUPERAntiSpyware.
* Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
* Under [b]General and Startup" tab, make sure, Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts option is UN-checked.
* Click the Scanning Control tab.
* Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
- Close browsers before scanning.

- Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
* Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
* Back on the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
* On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
* On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
* Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
* After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click OK.
* Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click Next.
* A notification will appear that Quarantine and Removal is Complete. Click OK and then click the Finish button to return to the main menu.
* If asked if you want to reboot, click Yes.
* To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
- Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
- Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
- If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.

3. Download, install, and run HijackThis:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hijackthis.html
Post HijackThis log.
Do NOT attempt to "fix" anything!
DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!
-
Have you heard of a program called "Perfect Optimizer"?
-
It's apparently a registry cleaner. Best to avoid those at all costs. They often cause more harm than good.
And even if it did work it would not fix malware infections.
-
Unfortunately I did a couple months ago.... I ran the Malwarebytes malware program....... after completion I printed the found 14 Infected Registry keys. I see where the program identified Perfect Optimizer as a Rogue. It was in a number of program files also....... After the clean it removed the program also.... Im still getting the pop-up even on the Virtual Dr website. Im going to try the other suggestion: SuperAntispyware,, sometime today...
-
I'd suggest running all the programs as Broni suggests above in that order. It's the best way we've found with dealing with malware. Skipping one or doing it out of order only delays getting rid of the infection.
-
Below are the scan results.. the malware was ran also and threats were removed.... presently still getting the pop up described earlier..

*** You need to update Java:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11
Uninstall all previous versions of Java through Add\Remove ("Programs and Features" in Vista).
*** Download, and run QuickTime Killer: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...e-Killer.shtml
After downloading, double click on EnGraphQuickTimeKillerInstaller.msi file.
You may be asked to download, and install .NET Framework
QuickTime Killer will remove QuickTime from start up and kill any running QuickTime processes. This application runs silently at start up and closes itself as soon as it takes care of QuickTime. QuickTime itself won't be removed from your computer, and will be available whenever needed.
NOTE. QuickTime is not a threat, but unnecessary startup, which can't be disabled in any other way.
1. Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.
2. Close all windows, except for HijackThis.
3. Put a checkmark next to the following HijackThis entries (some entries will be checkmarked to disable unnecessary startups; in those cases [marked with *], no actual program will be removed):
- O2 - BHO: ICQSys (IE PlugIn) - {F54AF7DE-6038-4026-8433-CC30E3F17212} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dddesot.dll

- O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present (to be fixed if not done intentionally; fix this entry if you did not activate the 'Lock homepage from changes' option in some kind of anti-spyware tool)
- *O20 - Winlogon Notify: !SASWinLogon - C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SASWINLO.dll
4. Click on Fix checked button.
5. Restart computer in Safe Mode (keep tapping F8 key, when your computer starts, until menu appears)
6. Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to Show hidden files, and folders.
7. Delete following files/folders (if present):
- dddesot.dll file from C:\WINDOWS\system32
8. Restart in Normal Mode.
9. Post new HijackThis log.

Hope I did this correctly...

If you're sure about leaving this alone:
- O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
...then...
Your computer is clean https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
1. Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html.
Run CCleaner.
2. Turn off System Restore:
- Windows XP:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore".
5. Click Apply.
6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
7. Click OK.
- Windows Vista:

7. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.
8. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html
9. Let me know, how your computer is doing.

I did decide to go back and remove O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
Presently the pop-up has not appeared. I have had CCleaner for at least eight months now. I'm not sure about the slim version as mentioned. Actually I run Ccleaner daily.. What amazes me is how these sort of things ends up on your system......, and where it orginates...... Thanks for the help with this problem.. I will finish up as described and will keep you informed.. ;)
