[RESOLVED] Printer and "Spooler Subsystem App" Problem

There were three security updates today for XP and after I restarted I kept getting a "Spooler Subsystem App" error message telling me that the service was not working.

A restart did not help and neither did going into Services to turn on the Printer Spooler which seems to turn itself off at each restart now. If I try to stop or to restart the service I get an error message that "An error has occurred in the script on this page"

I tried to print and I get an error message that there is no spooler. I tried to delete and reinstall my HP Laserjet 1020 but XP does not let me as it say the spooler service is not running.

I am not sure if this is the printer problem or an XP problem due the spooler message. It might be the printer as I seem to be unable to print in Ubuntu too.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Update:

I managed to go to C:/Windows/System32/Spool/Printer and delete the contents of the folder. I next went into Services and turned on Print Spooler. I was able to print a test page but when I tried to print a document I again got the error message that their was an error with the Spooler subsystem. When I then try to print a test page I am unable to.

There is something interfering with the printing and I am not sure if this is hardware based or OS based.

Try to reinstall printer driver.
Make sure, there is no printer application listed in "Startup" tab in msconfig.
Printer doesn't need to run as a startup.

After deleting everything in the C:/Windows/System32/Spool/Printer folder I was able to reinstall the printer using the latest drivers from HP. It seemed to work well until I tried to print a pdf file and then it all started again.

I cleared everything out again and reinstalled the printer and it is holding this time. I am not trying to print that one pdf file as I think that may be the culprit. I have printed other doc and pdf files without problem. The printer is even working again in Ubuntu.

If this was a problem with a corrupt pdf it would make sense that it might screw with the printer in both of my operating systems. I will mark this as resolved and keep my fingers crossed.

Just an update, I took that pdf file that I thought was corrupted and causing the problem to work and was able to print it out no problem.

I guess I will never know why this all happened.
