Almost certainly, external drives are just standard HDDs inside the case. However, if the external drive doesn't have its own power supply, then it will contain a laptop (2.5") drive, which can only be hooked up to a desktop computer with an adapter, and wouldn't be suitable as a long-term solution anyway, as the performance will be a lot worse.
well I did some research on the net and came up with.
The Hard drive inside can be a a Western Digital 3.5"and or Seagate.

If you can get the drive out of the case AND the pc uses SATA drives - you should be good to go.

Used as external to clone. opened and SATA drive. had connectors and changed. Up and running.
Using the "flaky" drive as backUp (Go figure) But, funds are lacking, right now.
I'm glad you got it sorted, even if only on a temporary basis :)
