I am unable to burn DVDs, I'm using Roxio Creator LE - Dell Edition and XP. When ever I click start/My computer, the DVD drive shows up as DVD-RW Drive (E:) but when I put a blank DVD into the DVD drive it changes to CD Drive and won't burn DVDs, it still burns CDs. I haven't changed any settings and was able to burn DVDs a few days ago with the same brand so it's not a bad batch of DVDs. I have reinstalled the software and driver. Any ideas what could be wrong? Thanks for any help.
DVD RW drives have 2 laser diodes. It appears your DVD diode is not working , but the CD diode is. I have a box full of them in the shop. You could try cleaning the optics or replace the drive for $20 .
I am having the same problem with both the CD and DVD drives, when I put in a blank disc they stop showing as CD-RW & DVD-RW to CD drives. I don't know if that's normal or not.Quote:

Boot to Safe Mode, go into device manager and remove all instances of the cd/dvd devices.
Reboot to Windows.
Windows should pick it up as new equipment and install the drivers.
Test.
OK. If we think its not a drive hardware failure, then its software or media related.
If I understand correctly, both a CDRW and a DVDRW drive on the same pc , overnite, are both experiencing the same issue, the drives or Windows cannot see writeable media (blanks) .
Things to try :
I will assume you checked the "enable CD recording" box already. ;)
1. Uninstall or disable any ATIP hiders. These are programs that break CD/DVD copy protection, usually by vitual drive. Also, check for any DRM software you may have installed.
2. Scan for malware and rootkits.
3. Try a different burning software.
4. Clean the drive lenses .
5. Change media. I have seen a stack of new blanks be bad in the middle, some even written to. Always use quality media.
6. System Restore . Restore to a previous point where the drives were working.
7. Update Windows, and the pc's chipset drivers .
8. Update the drives firmware.
Maybe others here have some other ideas they can post.

I got this error before and downloaded a fix for it but it didn't work. I have tried different software and discs but still have the same problem.

Solution #1: I had bought a 50 pack of CDs from Memorex and evidently they aren't good. So I bought different ones and it works great.
Solution #2: i know it makes no sense, but NOT putting marker on the CD [before burning] is the ONLY thing i did different. now it works.
Try washing the DVDs in lukewarm water with a few drops of detergent in it. That slightly alters the reflectivity of the disc, which sometimes helps.
