[ME] Com Port Problems

I'm trying to get back connected to Earthlink dialup to an existing account. What happened was that the hard drive failed on a computer and I loaded ME on another computer but when I installed the modem it says IRQ 11 and when I call up Earthlink they say Com 1,2,3 or 4 only. So I went into search in this forum and was quite confused. I went into the BIOS which is Award and went into the Advanced settings and at Onboard Serial Port 1 3F8/IRQ4 was selected and on Outboard Serial Port 2 2F8/IRQ3 was selected and I guess these are the normal settings. Do I have to make a different selection or is there something else I need to do? Do you need more info?

What kind of a modem do you have?
Internal or external?
Provided by Earthlink dialup?

Go to START, CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM.
Use HARDWARE tab, then DEVICE MANAGER.
Look under your MODEM, NETWORK ADAPTERS and PORTS (COM & LPT) and let us know what's showing on each.

The modem is internal and is not provided by Earthlink.

Go to the following & download to your desktop (you must agree):

After the download, run the .exe, which should install the driver for your modem.
NOTE OF CAUTION: I have not tested this (as I don't have this modem & don't want to skrew up my system), so you will be using this AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I downloaded the program and ran it. The driver installed so I checked to see which IRQ and it was still 11. So I removed the modem and ran the program which installed. Then checked the IRQ and it was still 11.

IRQ numbers and COM (Serial) port numbers are two entirely different things.

For example, the internal modem in this computer is on COM port 3, (uses IRQ 22), and it works fine.

In Device Manager, right-click your modem and select Properties. Somewhere under "Advanced Port Settings" there should be a pull-down where you can select a different, unused COM port for your modem. Here's what it would look like in Windows XP:

Unfortunately this computer uses Windows ME (Iwish she would get XP). So I don't get that screen with the "Advanced" tab. Thanks for the clarification on IRQ's and Com Ports.

See if this works.
Start by going to Control Panel, Modem tab. Then in Modems Properties click on Diagnostics tab. Then select the COM3 by clicking on it. It should show the modem name beside COM3. With COM3 selected, click on the More Infor.. button. This should show you the response of AT commands to the modem. If this works OK then the modem is OK and the drivers are correctly installed.

An error message here, indicates there may be a problem with the modem or the wrong drivers are installed.

If I click on the diagnostics tab I get "com1 no modem installed com2 no modem installed". If I click on the general tab it says "The properties cannot be displayed because the modem information is currupt. Remove the modem by clicking remove and add it again." So I removed it and tried loading the driver from the file ralph3124 suggested and also from the cd that came with the modem and I get the same message.

Time to get a different brand of modem is my best guess.

When I delete the modem am I going to have any leftover files or drivers on the computer?

Go to add/ Remove and uninstall it.
Device manager and remove it.
Shutdown and remove card.

By the 2nd reboot all should be gone.
