desgnr--It depends what you are trying to accomplish. I assume you run IE. Is it 6 or 7?
Since you have set IE to prompt you, you are getting prompted. That would drive me nuts. In IE7 (I cannot remember if IE6 had this) I have set IE Tools|Internet Options|Privacy tab|Advanced up to block all third party cookies and allow first party cookies. I also checked the box "Override automatic cookie handling".
But I try not to go to sites where malware could be lurking. (To help me, I use a HOSTS file.)
I also use a little program call Cookie Jar. http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/progra...m=Cookie%20Jar
Each time I open it, it tells me what cookies I have received since the last time I opened Cookie Jar, and allows me to delete those I do not want with a click or two.
Same place and setting in IE 6.
Use that cookie jar myself. Using it you can actually protect certain cookies, like the one for logging into vdr.
...and overall, cookies are just harmless text files.
I finicky about cookies. But good or bad, they are not a security issue.
That said, they can be a privacy issue. Especially when used by 3rd party tracking services. If a website uses one of these 3rd party companies, that website and all others that use the 3rd party service can piece together a profile of your surfing habits. Again, not a security issue as they would not know you personally, but they could certainly know a lot about you... what you like to buy, what blogs you visit (perhaps your political views), and so forth.
If you don't want to handle cookies one by one, do what Jim suggests. Especially the block 3rd party cookies part.
