STREAMING VIDEO PAUSING W/ INCREASED SPEEDS & NEW ROUTER?

:confused: I’m using Vista Home Premium and used to have 6 Mb with Charter Cable and an older Linksys 4 port EtherFast Cable/DSL hard wire router. “All” my streaming video was fine…i.e., I used to watch past episodes of Lost with no problem on my HD ViewSonic flat panel as well as other similar videos. Most of the "short" news videos are fine.

Then Charter Cable upped my speeds to 16 Mb and I bought a new Linksys wireless N Ultra Range Plus to handle the speeds as my old router couldn’t handle 16 Mb…why, I don’t know.

Now “many” of my streaming videos stop and start. I tried to watch a number of past TV episodes tonight and they all repeatedly paused (buffering I assume).

Any idea what’s causing this…my theory is the speed is too fast? If I can’t fix this I’m going to drop the Charter Cable speeds back to 6 Mb and either use my old router or buy a new hard wire router. I would think the new Linksys N router would be able to handle these speeds. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

This streaming video problem definitely happened right after the speed increase and new router.

Any ideas what may be causing this problem?

One thing I forgot to mention was Flash Player will not install and I've adjusted my security settings to enable or prompt. In add-ons I do show Flash Objects enabled...don't know if that's the same thing. Currently, on some web sites, I don't get the images which is usually because Flash Player isn't enabled or installed.

For a while Flash Player was closing IE7 and restarting. I used to disable it at times and may have unistalled it before the new router.

1. Uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control

I uninstaled everyting and the new Flash Player installed fine. We'll see how things go.

Web pages open fine.

The ABC TV streaming video episodes are still choppy and the video is not as nearly as good as before at 6 Mb (I have it set to HD).

I'll try going straight thru the modem and bypass the router (and reboot the modem as well).

I wonder if it possible the download speeds are too fast and causing the choppy video?

For some reason "everything" that plays on WMP has been grainy and the video view seems to be a little larger even on the reduced setting (clips I've had for a while and played great). This has happened in the last few days...no new software install. I did do a CCleaner but did a system restore afterwards.

I'll check the WMP settings 1st then may uninstall and reinstall it. This may be causing my streaming video problem.

Also, I haven't adjusted my HD ViewSonic settings or resolution at all.

The ABC plug in may need updating or even replaced.

What about other misc. clips (non-ABC) that played great just a week a ago. No matter what past I play, it's really grainy.

Do you think reinstalling WMP fresh might help. The minimized view is way too large from a week ago.

I noticed a Vista Service Pack 1 is available via Problems Support and Solutions in control panel. Would you recommend it?

I upgraded my NVidia driver which fiexed the video clips I've save for WMP but the streaming video is still choppy and lacks the quality I used to get with HD...again checking out past ABC episodes. The video quality was outstanding a couple of weeks ago.

I disabled NOD following ABC's help and the streaming episode played fine in HD like a DVD. I didn't have to do that before??? Maybe there's a setting in NOD that's needs to be changed.

Could be, or ABC has goof up on their end. I think NOD might be it though.

Funny, I didn't have to touch NOD a month ago, bu then again it could be on ABC's end for that now.

As for his point no 8... exluding the executable (flash player presumeably) then you'd need to go into the NOD gui (in ver 2.7, which I use) click imon>setup>miscellaneous> and add the excluded application there.

I see no harm in excluding flash streaming media player since streaming media itself would not be a route for viral infection.
